I was just lookin @ this iRiver cd mp3 player w/ a remote LCD. Wouldn't it be *****ing if we could stick the cd player in the trunk, hook it into the exisiting audio system, and extend the LCD to the front ?!

I had the Kenwood Z919 in my last car and I loved it. Seek time was a little slow, but this was pretty much the first MP3 deck on the market. The MP3 decks are getting better and better and the prices are starting to come down. IMO, it is the only way to go.

I'm waiting for this to come out however.....

DVA-7996
DVD/CD/MP3 Tuner/Changer Controller
Targeted Suggested Retail Index: TBD

DVD/CD/CD-R/MP3 Playback
Bass Engine? Plus
Media Xpander
XM Ready
MDAC
Optical Digital Output (CD audio, Dolby Digital?, DTS? capabilities)
Ai-NET Changer Controller
Dual Zone Audio Control
Black Out Display
Versatile Link Ready

Alpine's DVA-7996 bridges car audio and Mobile Multimedia, empowering users with the ability to play DVD movies, listen to CDs, access satellite radio or enjoy MP3 CDs. In fact, it's the first car audio DVD player with a built-in MP3 decoder. The DVA-7996 also features Alpine's Media Xpander sound correction technology, ensuring that music will sound as big as it was intended to be; Alpine's Bass Engine Plus technology for the ultimate in-vehicle sound control; and Dual-Zone Audio Control, allowing for DVD playback in the rear while using the tuner on the main system.

I have the Pioneer 740MP, and I love this thing....VERY convenient, and better than a CD changer. SQ is on par with regular CDs IMO, but I heard that if I upgraded to better speakers, then i would hear all the little nuances in the MP3 quality. Anyway, I just got my Focal speakers in and am waiting to get time to install the darn things. BTW, carstereotime.com has the best deals on Focals...They will match anyone's price...Even Internet.

Anyway, MP3 head units are getting better, I think anyone should consider them. Seek time, as others have said, is annoying, but bearable....

Hey, have you guys seen any wireless cassete adapters? I've seen the wired ones that you can hook up to the cd/mp3 discmans but those just looks damn ugly. I know there are some wireless remotes for mp3 players but I'm looking for the wireless adapters too. That way, I can hook my mp3 system the cheap way without ripping out my existing BOSE system

I've tried both cassette adapters, and the wireless kind that iutilize FM frequency, and I didn't particularly like the SQ...With the tape adapter, there was an annoying hissing noise at high volumes, and the wireless one was hard to match the frequency so it wasn't clear...But it could have just been the one I tried...But these are just my take on it.

I have the JVC KD-SH99 and it's awesome. It can read multiple directories and displays the ID tags. It has 1/8" aux input on front AND seperate LINE input RCAs in back. Some in-dash MP3 players can display long filenames if there's no ID tag on the .mp3, but this will only show the LinkinP~1.mp3 (So I used a little program to set all my ID tags based on File Names before I burned them to CD). One thing you want to look at is whether it can pick up mid-song when starting the car. My buddy has the 1st Gen Aiwa and it will go back to the beginning of the song that it was playing if the car is turned off and back on. Mine will resume where it left off which is a must when listening to Eddie Murphy RAW on a long trip and you gots to go take a p¡ss. The KDSH-99 has a 3-band EQ with stepped variable cut-off/width for each freq range. It also has non-fading sub out with sub level control. But the best is that it has a digital time-keeper! Yup, no matter what time it is, the KD-SH99 will tell you how far into the day you are

Just curious, so you had to replace your existing Stock audio system ? I'm looking to extend it since and put an MP3 player in the back or something w/ a remote in the front. I wonder if you can just put a switch before the AMP and then have that switch play from the stock system or play from an external source

I had concidered just getting an empeg or something along those lines, but the cost was just so much that I decided to get a CD reciever that played .mp3s. I had a 1st gen PINE D'Audio disc-man that played .mp3s that I hooked into my system via tape deck and powered it by cigarette lighter, but it was such a hassle to pull it out each time. Now i just slap in the CD that I want and I'm pimpin' :smokin: . It's also nice to have all my music on disposable media. If it gets fried in the 120 degree summers here, I'm out .50 and the time it takes to re-burn rather than 1000.00 for a hard-drive based operation. One thing you may look at is those 12-volt trunk-mountable DVD players that also play .mp3 encoded CDs. The only issue is that the remote is IR and not RF. If you know a goot eletronics engineer, they could re-wire the IR reciever into the dash and run the cable back to the trunk. But then you're w/out a good display. . Good luck either way.
