Messed up Navi?
Messed up Navi?
Sometimes if I dont listen to the Navi when I get directions, it assumes that I went that way and then I cancel the current route and I find myself not in the vicinity of where I acutally am. Is there anyway to reset this so the GPS picks up my car in the correct location? I tried turning the car off, taking the key out, taking the cd out, is there some special button or screen you can get to? Thanks

If you go the wrong way, it will always re-calculate a new route.

I had a huge problem with this when I drove down to DC from NYC a few weeks ago. My position would be very severely off and would not readjust itself. I found that you can manually reset your position by going to set up and clicking on page 2 of the options. There will be a button, I forget the label, that allows you to change the orientation of the cursor via onscreen buttons and move the position of the cursor around via the joystick. Press in on the joystick to confirm your adjustments and the navi usually fixes itself after a few seconds. I've only readjusted my position while the car is stopped, so I'm not sure how effective it would be if you were moving.
It's been happening to me pretty frequently these past few weeks and I'm not really sure why. It may be because of the weather, my tint, having the car start up in an underground garage, or just travelling on those specific roads. I also remember stuffing the trunk with a lot of luggage, possibly damaging the gps antenna. Do you think this is cause for alarm and a trip to the dealer?

The antenna is mounted on the back deck, drivers side. (Took me forever to find it, and I had a pretty good idea what I was looking for :o ) BTW, metallic tinting on the rear window will attenuate the signals, as will sticking one of those aluminum window shades on the back deck for storage. Try this, the next time the navi seems messed up, press the "map guide" "menu" and "cancel" buttons at the same time (you may want to pull over!), a diagnostic screen will come up will several options, hit the "gps info" button, as I remember, its the top right most button on the screen. You will get a screen that tells you your current lattitude, longitude, altitude etc., near the top left of the screen, there's a bar that will have small satellite icons that represent how many GPS satellites the system is tracking (I think there may be a number that indcates this as well). If you don't have *at least* 4 satellites, then the system can't get an accurate fix. I've seen as many as 11 (although I'm pretty sure our receiver is an 8 channel receiver, so it will pick the best 8 satellites) in that bar, and generally no fewer than 6. If you see 3, then something is wrong, you are either under a lot of cover (trees, tall buildings), or you may have something blocking the antenna.
