MB Quart QSD-216 ?

Does anybody have the MBQ QSD216's in their car? If so, how do you like them? Anybody have them in a 2nd gen TL? Thanks.

Ive'used them and they are great speakers, but to be honest they weren't the sound I was hoping for. That's just my personal taste though. To me the tweets were a little to aggressive, but then again I really prefer silk dome for a warmer sound. But the midbass was as good as could be expected for the price of the speakers.

Hmmm. Good point--I generally don't like metal tweeters either.

ScottP--what would you recommend? I'm looking for a natural sound that can be played loud even though the speakers are very close to the listener--not fatiguing or metallic.

My system consists of Sony CDP-C90, XDP-210EQ, and MTX 560 watt 4-channel amp.

Elduderino: I'm still waiting to hear back from that store. I think you're right about that being a KILLER price if it really is a pair. Are you sure those drivers are really made by DST (scan-speak, vifa, etc. )?

Yes, I've seen the DST version and and the same tweet is made for some other tweak lines...click on D2904/60000 and look at the drawing. The front is different (Alpine grill looks better) but the R is the same, including depth...

If you want to use the OEM location on the top of the door in the mirror sail, that tweet is probably too deep. I installed a set into a 2001 CL and the sail required cutting and re-forming with filler... gives you a nice angle but is kinda permanent... (it was a demo car and the owner wanted it that way - that and the Morel 5-1/4" were sweet together).

If you want a silk soft dome that fits there and plays really low, I think your options are a/d/s/, Dynaudio, Morel, and DLS. (DLS looks OEM'd by Morel).

I'm not putting the tweets in the sail panel--I already have holes cut in the door. I've got plenty of depth.

I found the specs on the SPX-F17M on Alpine's website. (That's the one we're talking about in a 6.5", right?) According to the drawings it's really a 5" driver, even though the title says 6 1/2" component.

I've used the type x's and they are a really good speaker and I loved the way they sounded. If i weren't in Memphis I would probably still be using them, but living in Memphis, selling Memphis equipment, I am using The Memphis MCSQ series right now, and personally i think they are just as good as the type x's.

THe Alpine paperwork is either the same for the 17 and the 13, or they screwed up and used the 13 illustration for the 17 (not too uncommon). I've seen the 17 and it's NOT 5" = the 13 is (those are the metric #s). I seriously doubt that 17 would go - when I was installing the 13s a set of 17s were going into a car in the next bay (GTI) and they were huge (they were goin into the floor in pods).

It should be noted that not all Type X's are the same. The SPX-F17 and 13M's use a different tweeter (with a tuned cast aluminum enclosure) and a more advanced and bigger xover than the SPX177s. Those tweets are totally different, and from what I hear are a Vifa design (just what I hear).

THat Vife tweet has a resonant freq around 1300, almost an octave higher than the Scan-Speak tweeter, and is a lot cheaper.

I guess what I'm saying is that the SPX177s are cheaper and not as good as the SPX-Fs... tuan209 disagrees with me, but that's OK...

Here's pictures of my current install if anybody is interested. I'm posting links instead image tags so this thread won't get slow to load.

Looks nice... The Alpine tweets may be smaller in outside diameter than the Diamonds - check that drawing.

The Alpine xover is too big in footprint to fit where you managed to fit the Diamond xover (the MB Q Reference xovers in my CR-V are in the same location).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't your Sony equipment let you active cross over the tweeter from the mid and get time alignment on the tweeter separate from the mid?

Hi,

No, the XDP-210EQ is just a 1/2 octave dsp eq, with cutoff for the sub, and time-delay f/r & l/r. I'm not ready to go bi-amp anyway, because I don't want to install any more amps or run more wires!

I was thinking the same thing: the MBQ crossovers would fit, and the Alpines will not...

Oh, btw, I am pretty sure the Alpine SPX-177 xover would fit.

So Derrick what speakers do you have in your car as of now? Couldn't really see any names from the pic.

They're DA M-series 661 in the front (with silk tweets). In the rear I currently have a mishmash of JBL mids, MBQ crossovers (12dB/oct @ 2.8k) and DA aluminum tweets. I actually didn't want to specifically mention the brand, because they've been so good to me--sending me free replacement tweeters, answering my numerous emails, etc. (Plus, they're from the Phoenix valley, where my family's from...)

I can get it to sound pretty decent with equalization, but I don't really have the midbass detail & warmth I'm after. Also, I find that I have to change the EQ for low volume vs. high volume--which is a pain in the ass.

Probably my biggest complaint is how certain rock music sounds. I can be listening to something more vocally like Lucinda Williams and it sounds terrific. Then I put London Calling on from the Clash, and the midbass doesn't sound quite right.

I think I'm just one of those people that will never be happy until I get something competition quality...
