In a free space environment, a folded horn design is technically more effiecent than a band pass. It can play very loud at very low frequencies. This is pretty inpractical in a car tho as they take up huge amounts of space. Our folded horn subs at work are 2x2x4ft. for a single 18" and weight over 250lbs. Some of the subs one of the larger touring companies around here has aare 4ft cubes w/ (2) 12" drivers that can play down to 20hz @ 145db. That is insane, and yes it could make you lose control of your bowels.

In a car, it all depends on your choice of sub, choice of music, and actual car. I disagree w/ the above poster. I think sealed is better for rap, ported for rock. Rock tends to have a general punchy kick thing going on, and you can tun a box for a nice loud kick in da nutz. Rap/hip-hop on the other hand has many low and changing tones. You could tune the ported box down to a lower freq but for anything else, it would sound like ass. I like a nice ported box overall with the proper low cut filters. Sealed boxes are more idiot proof. Most peope don't understand that playing freqs lower than the tuning of the ported box can unload the driver and that's what makes it sound like ass. A proper low cut would solve that easily, but again most people don't know what that is. Sealed boxes almost always need tons of EQ as they have HORRIBLE response curves. A ported box can be tuned jsut right so it is actually fairly smooth.

Bandpass boxes should be illegal.
