CL: Loss of Memory in OEM radio

Loss of Memory in OEM radio
I have a 2001 CL. The radio has started losing memory and requiring code input when the key is turned off. Once on, everything works fine. I know there is an unswitched power input. Can the unit work with the unswitched power source off or should I look for a problem inside the unit?
