Looking to upgrade audio in 2004 TL

Greetings everyone,

I've had my 2004 Silver TL AT w/ NAV for about two weeks now, and am looking to seriously upgrade the sound, without damaging the 5.1 Surround.

Music is mostly 70-90 Rock, with some jazz, urban occasionally thrown in.

I am not into rocking everybody out, but I definetly want to feel my bass, and have it super tight.

I already have:

Orion HCCA 275
Orion HCCA 250
(I'll call these competition level amps, as they tend to put out higher wattage than they are rated at)

(2) JL 10W6v2 Subs.

I want to keep the stock headunit, and replace every speaker.

I'm thinking matching 6.5 components in the front doors and rear deck, and something to increase the sound quality of the center channel speaker. The stock 8" sub will come out.

Anybody have recommendations on the component speakers (I'm leaning towards Kappa Perfects or maybe MB Quart QSD 216s).

Am I going to be able to pull off the 5.1 surround with a 2 channel amp running 1 channel to the front door speaker and 1 channel going to the rear deck speakers? I believe I will have to leave the stock amp going to the center channel.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Ben

I am in the process of doing the same. However, if you run one channel to the front and one to the rear in mono, then you will lose left and right channel separation. It might be better to leave the center-channel alone (power it by the factory), and get another 2-channel or mono amp for the sub, or get a 4-channel amp and use one of your 2-channel amps.

you will need to get a speaker level to line-level converter. The amp is located behind the front passenger kick panel. That's the easiest place to tap into the speaker wires.

So what you are saying is that the head unit uses speaker level to conect to the factory amp, and not RCA's? Why would they do this, don't they know that RCA's are much cleaner.

your right but you are forgetting two things. one is the factory amps are designed specifically and only for speaker level input. Second being that it far mor cost effecient for auto manufacturers to use speaker level rather than rca's, so guess what they would and do choose. . .
