A little issue I'm having with my type X

I have a 12" type X sub power by an Alpine MRP-1000 and on my way home the other night, the sub cut out on me. Keep in mind that I wasn't playing at a loud volume. maybe vol12 on on my CDA-9887.

I noticed that when I push on the cone the sub would turn on again and then cut out when ever I let go.

Does this mean that my voice coils blown?

Ehh, i would suggest to take the sub out and see if one of the speaker connectors came loose ( the one's that are on the sub themselves)

Was there a burning smell at least?

Btw, if one of them did come loose from the cone. Don't try to solder it yourself, its jeweler type work lol. Take it for repair.

I took out the sub but I there was no burning smell. I only checked the speaker wires and the connectors though. My box is also stuffed with polyfill. I'll check on that to see if that's the problem.

Ok. I guess I'm gonna have to do that tomorrow. It's a PITA though cause my box is fabricated to the trunk. Is this something that happens often?

It's not a blown vc. It would be seized and you wouldn't be able to move it. Connection issue as already suggested, you'll have to pull that sucker out and check it.

It happened to me with my 10'' RF sub, but the wire came completely loose from the cone. I have tried to connect it back, but it's tedious work and i did not want to damage the cone itself. Hopefully thats not the case with your type x, maybe a wire came loose from the terminals. Either way it doesn't sound like it's anything serious.

I have 2 12-inch type X's myself they're. But since my lazy self wired all the stuff myself my ground cord somehow(lol snapped in half .. tell me how a 0-gauge wire snapped in half ) became disconnected and was of course in turn making the subs go in and out. I would really suggest checking all your connections especially your ground!!! If that isn;t it come back and reply and il help you all i can with the type x's in particular.

Sorry Sorry Guys. I've been really busy with school and work and plus it's been raining. I'm gonna take it out (again) tomorrow afternoon and look at the tinsel leads. Hopefully it's not anything too serious cause listening to only mids and highs suck ass.

Disconnect the wires from the amp. Measure resistance between the positive & negative. Verify that it's close to the nominal impedance you've got the subs wired for. Then do the same while doing your "push-in" test.

These 2 measurements will yield different numbers, due to the fact that more coils is in the magnetic field.

The test is to look for an open. The resistance should remain constant (measure; push \in; measure).

Oh, yeah, then that makes sense. I thought you were talking about measuring while pushing on the cone.

If he was to do it in a continuous motion, there might be some minor variation in resistance, but I think it would be negligible. I doubt someone can move the cone at a rate of 10Hz, if even that. But what I wanted him to check was to see if all of a sudden he got an open circuit, because that would be a definite sign that something was amiss.

well I took the sub out of the box today to check the tinsel leads and this is what I found

It appears that the leads are woven directly into the spider so I cannot really inspect the leads that well or do any repairs if it was loose/fried.

I did push into the spider where the leads were and the sub turned on then stayed on. Haha. I played a couple of songs to see what would happen and everything seemed fine. No cutting in and out or static. So as of now I have it back in the box and hopefully that "fixed" the problem. lol.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll report back tomorrow to say if it's still working. If it turns off again I might have to take it in to a repair shop.
