1. Are you looking at LCD or CRT?
2. How much are you looking to spend?
3. Make sure the for LCD that the native resolution is supported by your video card.
4. How big and is this for gaming only or combination use?
5. Also for LCD, check the contrast (are blacks really black or just a really dark grey).

Consider all these things. Then, make sure you take a good amount of time just looking at the picture quality. It's amazing how much of a difference there is after staring at a monitor for 20 minutes.

Sony has started making XBRITE LCD monitors (like the ones in their laptops)... check them out. I saw a 19" one at Circuit City. The res was a little low (1280 x 1024), but it looked sweet.

teg, who will buy anything Sony makes.

EDIT: 19" would make a huge headrest screen!

Assuming you mean HR monitors? Or indash?

I'm talking HR here. None of these fit the TSX OE HR itself. You will need a wider one. What fits the TSX HR is awfully small for the money and work.

Widescreen.

TFT is a must.

You really want good 12V input filtering, but you can't tell before hand very well, so if you have a engine video "noise" problem you will need a inline power filter.

Most HR monitors are 1/4 VGA resolution. VGA is the next step up and is rare. Alpine likes to say about their in-dash 7" VGA that it has 400% more pixels than standard, and that's technically true, but remember that 1/4 VGA does fine with any signal on a yellow composite-video RCA cable. I don't know of any VGA HR monitors at present except for some touchscreens that have specific applications and are way pricey.

You want good off-axis viewing angle, but with headrests that's less critical. Most say 60 degrees L and R. Some offer vertical swiveling, which is nice, but not needed.

You really want cold-weather performance, both in response time (does the motion look "blocky" when it's cold) and with the electronics behind the glass. Unfortunately, many suppliers don't know the answer to this. There is no spec other than the bottom of the temp spec, and you will probably have to call the maker to get that (or look in the manual).

Decide if you want buttons on it, if you want an IR pickup that will allow IR remote control of your unit, and if you want IR transmission for headphones (not likely for your app, common for kid use). When you're clear, don't pay for what you don't want.

Directed Audio, Rosen, Audiovox, and a few others use a 7" widescreen from Taiwan that works well and looks good (on and off). It comes with a bucket that looks good on HR installs - nice rounded flange, etc. It has a seperate box with power filtering and two inputs. It has a remote but no IR TX for headphones.

Directed calls it the HMV700, Rosen calls it the UN7000. The Avox unit works the same but has buttons on the sides and does not look as good - it's the LCM7069NP.

5.6 is not widescreen and therefore not recommended.

look at 5.8 if you can find them - that's widescreen.

I'm not clear that ANY worthwhile monitor will fit our HR. You didn't ask that as a requirement! : ) Sorry, thought I called that out.

Do what that other guy did and get gray leather HR from a wrecked Chrysler minivan - they matched great!
