TL: jl audio components?

What do you mean by pre amp? If you're talking about adding a set of components and adding an aftermarket amp to power them, yes this is possible with a factory head unit. Personally, I'd look elsewhere besides JL, especially for speakers/component sets, but it's your money... I heard a set of JL tweets in my buddy's Jetta and I wanted to run away the highs were so unbearable...

You buy a LOC (line output converter) and tap into your factory speaker wires before the factory amp. This will give you an RCA output that you can use to connect to your aftermarket amp. Then, run power (fused from the battery), ground and remote wire, hook up your speaker wires, and you're ready to go.
If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for the XR's? And can you return them?

If you can, I'd return them and pick up a set of Rainbow SLC 6.5 comps and a Sundown 125.2... Leave the rears stock on head unit power, and you should get much better sound out of the Bows, plus it cuts your bill in about half...

Don't let others tell you a speaker set sounds bad. It might sound bad to them, but it's not their ears that will be listening to your system all the time. YOU run the speakers YOU think sounds the best. And always listen to a speaker set before purchasing them.
Now in my opinion I haven't been too impressed with JL's components either. They are a little bright for me too. And that's why I don't run them in my car. However if you like yours, then that's all that matters.
The nice thing about the slash series amplifiers is that you don't need a hi/low converter. It uses balanced inputs and can accept speaker level signal directly. They even offer an RCA to speaker level adapter for this: http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_c...l.php?cat_id=5
