Question If adding a sub should the Bose sub be removed to leave a hole for bass to enter car?

Just wondering whether anyone has tested this idea out - normally most deep Bass under 100hz is felt more than its heard. But i was wondering if it would make any sense to take out the bose sub and leave the hole open (the factory grill would still cover the hole for aesthetic reasons). Would this allow great bass transfer into the cabin of the car? I have a sealed enclosure with 2 10" Stillwaters firing backwards into the truck so i am not talking about directing a ported enclosure up into the hole. I am in the process of doing my install and because i am doing some custom work, it will be at least another few days before i get the system going to try it for myself. In the mean time I would appreciate any experiences anyone has had in this area.

I have the same thing...dual sub closed box facing backwards.

Just ripped the stock amp out and left the stock sub. If you decide to pull the stock sub, let me know the results.

I believe if you have a sealed box, it would be better to have your trunk as closed off as possible. If you have a band pass or ported box, with holes facing the hole left by the trunk, then it would make a difference.

Wonder if the stock sub will act as a passive radiator if its left in, and that might not be such a good thing depending on its resonant frequency???

I have 2 Alpine 10's facing the back of the trunk w/o factory sub, and it sounds real good.

They are type E's. Not as good as the type S, but they sound good.

I have 2 rockford HE's and I have tried it with the stock sub in and out. I also have a sealed enclosure. It sounded better with the sub still in place b/c the bass hit a bit tighter and harder, I kind of felt it more in my chest, withou tthe stock sub it was a bit louder with certain types of bass hits but not as solid and I didnt feel it. I am in the process of trying it with a solid board in place instead of the stock sub to see if it changes andything. I will post my results.

2002acuraTL:
With the stock sub out, there will be a hole in the rear deck that will act like a port, with your trunk acting like a box. And since you're looking at such a difference in size...you're going to see a horribly out of tune quasi-bandpass box created by that. It will totally ruin your spectral wave.

Chinoz: thanks for the input. i know exactly what you mean from your description. I will probably made a panel out of MDF to cover the hole given what you have said.

TLrunner: at first i thought about it being like a port, but its a huge hole and no tube at all, so its more like a bandpass slot. Given Chinoz experiment, i will probably cover it up. besides, with the hole open and the stereo off (not finished), i can hear things rattling in the trunk like my fishing pole, and its getting on my nerves already. I gotta get my trunk carpeting so i can finish the box, trim panels, and the install once and for all!

2002acuraTL no matter if the length of the "tube" is 6 feet or 1 inch...it still acts as a bandpass port. Do you agree or disagree?

I am not exactly sure when an opening gets too big to have any accoustic effect beyond just letting more sound in. Will it really have an impact on the overall characteristics of my sealed box, i cant say yet until i get the system done and put the Rockford Fostgate Tone generator across the sub amp and start graphing the results with the SPL meter.

I was researching the forum on this topic. I was thinking about taking the factory sub out, thething is, It will be a sealed box, but it is going to be directly below the opening going into the car and firing directly upwards and a little back to bounce off the back window. Now wouldnt this scenario work, considering its going to be no more than about 3 inches below the factory subs old place???

Try it with it in and out. It only takes about 5-10 mins. to do either. I had it out at first and now after hours of tweak'in and tun'in, it is in for good. It all depends on your personal preferance. I like clean tight bass, with the sub in it seems tighter. Happy tuning.

Well now that i have had an opportunity to evaluate this in my car, i can tell you that, at least for a sealed box enclosure, you will want to keep the hole closed up for tighter bottom end. With the hole open, the bass is more muddy and there is a pronounced gain at 80+hz
