Crutchfield has a 'Guide To Car Stereo Installation.' Good place for the basics.
http://pix.crutchfield.com/CarGuide/CarGuide_150.pdf
This site has some good articles:
http://www.nightstormer.com/tech.htm
Most manufactures also have information and tech support:
http://www.xtant.com/html/techSupport/index.cfm
Information for subwoofers and enclosures:
http://www.diysubwoofers.org/
I would like to see sites other member use.

order up a free Crutchfield catalog, the catalog has great advice and explains things throughly... its very helpful when you're starting out.

Got to: www.sounddomain.com - Things are a bit crazy over there because of the amount of traffic. But if you actually take the time and sit there reading everything...you will know so much more.

The link is to an Adobe Acrobat file. What comes up is the Crutchfield Car Stereo Installation Guide.

Anyways, crutchfield is a good place to get basic info, but you just have to dive in and get a start-up system. I doesn't have to be the best stuff out there - buy what you can afford. But you'll listen to what you have and over time you'll learn what you like and don't like, and you'll hear other stuff that sounds better than what you have. Then you start upgrading or adding components and along the way, you'll talk to people who know their shit.
of course if you got hella money, you can just buy a good system from the start
just my opinion.....
