I Screwed Up, Someone Please Help!!
Ok, I did tons of research on new component speakers for my 2000 TL. I finally decided on Alpine Type R, 6 1/2's. I am going for an all Alpine setup. I checked Alpine's site for dimensions because I knew it would be a tight fit. The picture showed magnet at 3 3/4. Plenty of room for that with a spacer. I get the speakers in and what the pic did not show was the huge basket from the magnet to the back of the woofer. The only way these babies are fitting in the door is either cut the door, about 90 % sure I do not want to do this, stock will not go back if I do, or use a 2" spacer, 100% sure this will not work. I am in need of some suggestions. I bought them brand new online and can not return them. Anyone tried any other mounting locations. Kick panels maybe. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hey man, I have the Alpine Type R's up front with spacers and it works out perfect. My spacer is a lil bit more than a inch though and the sound is incredible. What amp are you gonna use to power them. THose thing have a sensitivity level that suck azz. Alot my friends power there speakers off there deck and I use a Fosgate 550X to power all my Type R's and the loudness is about the same. A audio place did all my install and illl check on everything for you.
Hey dnd. You really put the 6 1/2's in the door? Did they have to cut the door? Those things stuck out quite a bit. Even the magnet barely fits in the opening. If you could let me know some specifics on what they did, I would be extremely grateful. Pics would be awesome if you have some.
For now, I am going to use the Alpine deck. It has the new MOSFET internal amp. Suppose to put out about 60 x 4 max. Probably around 30 x 4. My future plan is an all Alpine setup. Will consist of:
Alpine 7893 Head Unit
Alpine either F340 or F540 4 channel
Alpine M300 or M500
Alpine 6 1/2 Type R components
Alpine 5 1/4 coaxial, rear fill
Alpine Type R subs, pair of 10 or 12.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Maybe he used 5-1/4 inch versions?
This size issue is a common problem with the Acura/Bose system. It's not really made big enough to fit TRUE 6'1/2 inch speakers. Sorry about that... But research would have told you that the stock depth that you can fit a magnet into the door frame is 2-1/2 inches (before hitting the window) and 1 inch to 1-1/2 inch is the MAX that you can get away with a spacer and still have the door panel fit back in place. A spacer thicker than 1 inch requires the use of special longer door panel snaps. This gives you a TOTAL SPEAKER DEPTH DIMENSION OF around 3-1/2" to 3-3/4"... So you might have just squeaked by with those depths. But it has also been posted on this board many times that the stock door frame hole is only around 4-1/2" MAX! That is what killed me on a pair of MB Quarts speakers that I was looking at... and it sounds like it got you as well. They sure didn't make it easy to upgrade this crappy system... Not sure what you can do at this point
Good luck!

Southbound...Thanks for all your input. The thing that actually got me was Alpine's bad description and picture of the speaker. Depth of the speaker was fine and the magnet fit was fine. If the picture would have been accurate, then I would not have bought the 6 1/2. I am still waiting on DND to see how they fit the 6 1/2 in there. One way or another, I will get them to work. It is either cut the door or make or buy kickpanels. ValueTL says the 98 and up Honda Accord panels will work.
The the speakers are ALpine Type R 6 1/2. the spacer is about 1 and a half inch. Wait Also I am Using ALpine SPR 175A. They are the Blue looking alpine R's. The sizes of both of them should be the same though. All the spec on power and everthing where the same to. I dunno if you want to use that internal amp to power them it just wasnt enough for me. I had a rockford 300x powering my components and the rear comps and it wasnt enough. Right now I got the 550x and the clarity is so much better. I love alpine and my next setup is just gonna be strictly alpine. THis is what I have right now
ALpine CDA7897 source (fantom face)
SPR175a compnents
SPS 6/1'2 in the back
12 Kickersolobaric
Rockford power 550s and 550X
600 watts to the sub at 4ohm
250 to 300 watts going to the mids and highs at 4ohm
my 550x is rated at 706 watts at 2ohm!!!!

dnd....they must have trimmed your door opening a bit. I measured this morning and the spacer would have to be at least 1 3/4" without any modification to the door. Do you know if they trimmed the hole in the metal? I wonder if any of the material around the factory grill could be removed to allow the speaker to stick out farther? I do appreciate the help.

I dont know if they trimed the door or not. Ill ask for u on monday. IF that is the casue they probally did trim the door. I wanna try to upgrade to some better components soon. I am now lookin at CDT, focal, diamond, and ID, I really want teh Alpine F-1 but just to damn much.
Just let me know what you find out. I am leaving town this morning. Headed to vegas till Tuesday so, if I do not respond, you will know why. I am leaning toward trying to get the components in kick panels. Either buy the 98 and up Accord's from q logic or make my own. Do you not like the sound of the Type R's? I based my decision to get them largely on the fact that they used them in the Alpine Acura RSX demo vehicle.

Type R's sound freakin awesome but not at really high volumes I Mean I want it louder. I am already over powering them into distortion. I am sending about 88 watts RMS to them. I wanna find some 2 ohm components and send 170 watts to them in the front and move my Type R's to the back. I am more into mids and highs than bass.
MY door isnt cut, The spacer is just about 1 1/2 to 1 1/3. ANd also the Iam gonna keep the Type R's I adjusted the crossover on my deck and my system now sound so much more like a live concert.
No problem dnd. There is pretty much no way my Type R's are going in the door without modifying the steel. I am going to try some kick panels and if it warms up enough, try them today. Thanks for all your help. I am greatful. I will let you know how the kicks turn out.
There is a local person that I use for some stereo stuff. He would charge $250 for kicks. But, I think I am going to have him do an install in my trunk for the sub and amps so, I thought I would save the money and try the kicks myself.
I got started on the kicks yesterday. I cut the rings out of 5/8" MDF. I got the glass layed down into the kick for the bottom of the speaker pods. I am pretty much following the guide that Auto, Sound & Security put out in the April 2002 issue. This is my first attempt with glass'n so, if it comes out bad, I figured I could just try again. They are cheap to build. Today, I am going to use some 1/2 dowel rod and glue the rings to the glass bottoms on angles. I will post some pics when I get thru and keep you informed on the outcome.

ok today I finally got the chance to take apart all my doors and check for you. all my doors have been cut. The audio guy said they didnt have to cut but I checked for myself. My rears are cut just a lil but didnt use a spacer. The front use a inch spacer and are cut.
AAHAA. We now get to the bottom of it.
That was one of my big reasons for not cutting the doors was, not being able to mount the stock speakers back. In order to get the Type R's to fit. I would have to cut so much, that there is no way to make the stock speakers fit back, without making an adapter for them.
I am almost done with the kick panels. I am just trying to find a beige carpet that matches. Everything is too dark. I decided to go with carpet on these to hide my couple of mistakes. I could probably make some more later and do them alot better and use vinyl or even paint. But, since this was my first fiberglass project, they are not what I would call mistake free. But, I am still pretty proud of them. I will get pics as soon as I have them done.

I dont think teh stock speakers would go back in ever. Also I am gonna keep my car for a long time, I am gonna find some specs on those Q logic kickpanels and see if another pair of Type R's components fit.
If I add another set up Type R components up front my audio place said the bass would just draw back the bass the high would over kill it. My mids and highs are killers now and it would just be crazy if i got more. so ill stick wit my current setup.
THere is no way in hell those type R would fit without cutting. I took the woofer out and that thing is huge. THink of it as a 6 1/2 subwoofer. WIth those speaker and how everyhting is setup sound quilty is out of this world.
dnd is right. I am not even sure the 5 1/4 would fit in the doors. I have a pair of Rockford 6 3/4 components and the Type R's are every bit as big. The Type R's just look good too. But, they are massive.
I got hold of an old digital camera. If I can figure it out, I will take some pics of the unfinished pods. I have not located the carpet yet. How do you load pics to this site? Is it possible or should I just load them up to my home page and give you the link?
