I need help

I just recently bought the jvc 710 dvd screen for my 03 tl. I want to get subs and an amp. I was thinking about going with the Kenwood eXcelon KAC-X1R monoblock amp running two 12" 2 ohm alpine type r subs. Would this work with my setup, seeing as my deck only had 1 rca preout?

That should be alright, but I dunno if I'd use those subs... I'm not a big fan of them due to lack of sound quality. A lot of people on here like JL, I personally like Rockford Fosgate woofers. It's all a matter of personal choice though... That set-up would work, just do a little research on wiring, and you could wire the subs to show the amp a 2 ohm load, and maximize it's potential... Either way, good luck with the install...

I was also thinking about putting 2 boston acoustic g5s with the duel voice coils. These are 4 ohm subs. Will this amp have enough juice to run those subs well, and how will 4 ohm subs work compared to 2oh with this amp?

With the dual 4-ohm voice coils, you could wire the subs to show the amp a 1-ohm load or a 4-ohm load. Personally, I'd go to a store and listen to each sub (I know Best Buy around here stocks the type-R's, but I don't know of anywhere that stocks the g5's) and then make your decision based on that. The amp could push the g5's if you wired them to show a 4-ohm load, and that amp would push about 300 watts to each woofer. The g5's are rated at 400, so you shouldn't hurt the subs, and you'd be taking it easy on the amp. If you wired the subs to show a 1-ohm load, I have no idea what kind of power that amp would put out. I can't find a power rating at 1-ohm. Also, the amp would get a lot hotter.

According to Crutchfield.com, you're looking at around $1200 for that set-up (the amp and g5's). I can think of a lot better way to spend $1200 on stereo gear... For the $700 that your subs would cost, you could get a JL 10W7, which is going to sound better and hit harder than those Type-R's. I'm not saying that's what I'd do, but just a reference for you. For that money, you can take your pick of the best 10" woofers, which is really enough bass for most people. It's your call how you want to spend your money... PM me if you want my advise...

or you could ditch JL audio..and look into the FI Q which will sound better than the w7 AND the type r..cheaper than the 10w7 too

I was just using the w7 as a price reference... I wouldn't waste the money on it either...

thanks guys each sub would only cost 170 each new and the amp is only 230 new so i might stick with that setup i used to have two w6's with a 1000 watt jl amp and it fucked up more times than i could remember, so im trying to stay away from jl and try something different. That was the car tho, i was running them with the factory bose deck in a caddilac thing was gay

A dual voice coil subwoofer was meant to be used as a single low end driver in a stereo system where the left signal went to 1 coil and the right signal went to the other coil. A good mono sub amp will have a L & R input to mix the signal electronicly to a sumed output. You can get away with using 1 subwoofer in a stereo system because low audio frequencies are not directional. And if your back seats don't fold down, you'll appreciate the smaller space a single subwoofer requires in your trunk as opposed to a twin sub system.
When you have 2 voice coils wired in series, __O__O__,the impedence will add. For example two 4 ohm coils wired in series will equal 8 ohms.
When you have 2 voice coils wired in parallel, =O=O, the impedence will halve. Two 4 ohm coils wired in parallel will equal 2 ohms.
If you're not getting the volume you think it should have, make sure the polarity (positive + & negative -) of your woofers and amps are correct.

You seriously need to give up the hate campaign for JL Audio.

if your gonna spend 170 each for the type R's, maybe you should think about maybe getting just one RE xxx or an Image Dynamics sub or something comparable.

That way your rockin something a lil more unique plus top of the line and save some space in the trunk as well.

I have one 10 inch type r and i'd say its pretty good, takes more abuse than the jl. The jlw3 i had before it but it blew out with 500 rms to it! , the type R's are good enough to get you started but i think you'll eventually want something else.

on another note, i think some of the hate for jl comes from the fact that it's pushed in just about every car audio shop in the US. Yet its nearly impossible to find a shop sellin RE, ID, CDT, Rainbow or any other great unknown brands!

If i go to my local car audio store, i know what they wanna sell me "JL" !!!! Which is not so bad, but for the love of god just give some choices!!!!!lol !!! is that too much too ask!!

I agree with that. But JL Audio is the most proven brand of subwoofer, period. The quality, consistency and performance is top notch. Nobody can match the history of success and technology that JL Audio has earned.

Yes, there are other subwoofers with a similar or better value initially. However, I would still prefer a 10 year old JL Audio 10W3 or 10W0 to a new product of similar value.

i was gunna buy boston acoustics for that price. I have decided to get 2 12" type r.s though for $200 so i can run 500 watts rms to each of them.

I had 2 w6's and a jl 1000 watt amp. Sick sound, but hefty price. Online shopping is where its at. Sonicelectronix is the shit

jl has proven their worth over their years, but its gotta be hard for these other companies to get their products on shelves if every store is pushing jl hard. it just does not promote fair and healthy competition.

i mean daam, where can one go to demo a set of speakers other than jl, or a brand carried by circuit city or best buy!!! really dont know.

so in the end the choice is to either go with jl , alpine, sony, etc etc or take a chance and buy something you have not heard in person.

anyways, sorry for hijacking the thread with this jl stuff!!!

sonicelectronix ftw!
oh and also how you said you had 1 rca preout, it's cuz it's a jvc deck, i only have 1 on mine too, you just need one of these to split the 1 connection into 2 http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...AICY-1M2F.html and then just connect normal rca's into that
and btw i had a caddillac before too, what a nightmare, the charging system sucked balls in that car, i was only pushing a 500 watt amp and if i turned it up too much my voltmeter would just drop like crazy

anyways, gl with the system

We had them in big BOGO stacks when I worked at CarToys. Circuit City also had them as BOGO's but not sure they still carry JBL. Not a bad speaker. But not a TYPE-R either.

Steve, you're crazy man! If it doesn't fit you'll have some grinding to do.
