Hooking up radar detector to car's power supply?

I have a radar detector (forget the model right now, buts its not the nice one that comes with the tap wire for plugging in to your car's power supply) and want to just cut off the cigarette lighter adapter part and plug the wires directly into the car's power - this should be easy, right? I've seen instructions for hooking it up to the fuse box on the driver side but I keep the detecter on the passenger side and was hoping to run the wires behind the dash to below the glove box (there is a fuse section below the glove box, right? or am I remembering this wrong?) - anyone done this, or know if its possible? Im tired of the wire hanging down the center of my dash.

what kind of radar do you have? some brands you can buy an accessorie that will let you hardwire it into the car. I have a friend that did it that way and hooked it up to the car's stereo.
