Post Hidden Radio adjustments?

Has anyone heard anything about the Acura-Bose stereo having midrange adjustment capabilities if you press and hold certain redio buttons?? I love the car, but don't feel that the radio is using all of the 140 watts!!

That would not be cool if it was true.
I don't like hidden features, especially when things cannot be used to their full potential.

I'll have to read the section on the radio again later tonight.

Our Navi (atleast the 99 version) have many hidden screens. The helm manual has all of them listed. I'll check for the radio later.

Whoa, what are the hidden screens on the Navi and what do they do? Also will they work on a 2001?

I have a 99 and it works on mine. You can try it. Wont hurt anything.

These screen mostly use by the dealer for diagnostic test. These screens are:

System Link
Tire Calibrate
Monitor Check
Yaw Rate
Unit Check
Cyclic Diagnostic
In-line Diagnostic

To get to the menu that contain these screen do the following:

Turn the ignition switch ON(II), then press and hold the keys in this order and keep them pressed simultaneously

Menu key
Map/Guide Key
Cancel Key

Coooollll...i just played with it this morning and was stumped by two things...one was the history feature. Looked like it was encoded but the word 'history' on a GPS system kinda makes me wonder (i will explore with it more later). The next thing i found was pretty cool...it was software download. I pressed the button and al my speakers went half-volume and a little progress meter came across the screen and downloaded some kind of software update (took about 1 minute). I didn't check the version of the firmware before i did this so i am not sure, but anyone else with a 00' 3.2 TL check your version then kick off this download..i am now at 1.09 i think or something like that (i'll verify today while i'm installing my dvd bracket for my changer and my 02' tails ).

Just thought i would share

This might be the process it does when you start the navi after disconnecting the battery. This is just my guess.

This is pretty cool, one thing though, what does this Tire Calibrate fuction do. Can it make the car think I have smaller or bigger tires on the car. Also I did the download thing and my version changed to 2.022.

actually the tire calibrate function allows you to calibrate the tire pressure from within the car. It's a pretty cool feature because I deflate the tires to 32 psi to get better ride quality on city streets. Then you just press the "+" button to increase psi whenever you want.

How the hell could the onboard computer regulate the tire pressure in the tires??????

To deflate seemed possible, but to inflate is where I quit believing. All I know is I can't wait to play with mine.

It is not use calibrate your tire pressure or anything. It is use to calibrate the way GPS gets the information from your tire. After all your car has to move for GPS to get information properly.

Alpine (who makes the navigation systems for Acura) includes both a map and a software image on each disc. That way, the correct software version is always used to read the map on a disc.

However, the software download time can be pretty long--it must be programmed into on-board Flash memory. So what the unit does is basically compare the checksum of the software it already contains to the one on the disc. If the checksums match, no download takes place and the software simply runs off of Flash.

If the checksums don't match, however, a download takes place--that's probably what you "forced" the unit to do via the maintenance screens.

The Navi unit reads a pulse train coming from your wheel rotation (called the VSS or Vehicle Speed Sensor signal) to determine your speed. Speed plus heading (from the turn rate gyro) gives you your (2-dimensional) velocity vector, which allows the unit to determine where you are at any moment, even without the GPS signal. In fact, Alpine's Navis seem to use GPS only as a long-term correction factor and relies mostly on the speed/turn rate to give you your current position and heading.

The number you're adjusting is probably a scaling factor for the pulse/mile computation. I think Alpine's software uses an adaptive algorithm to automatically adjust this value as you drive around.

I really doubt you can view DVDs on the Navi unit. The Navi uses a pretty wimpy microcontroller (Some embedded PowerPC I think, not sure) to drive the system, far too underpowered to perform software MPEG-2 decoding. I really doubt that the Navi unit includes an MPEG-2 hardware decoder on board--why include a part (which costs you money) which you're not going to use?
