Headunit and interior speakers.

I am confused about the power delivery of a headunit to a interior speaker.

I have this Pioneer headunit: DEP-P4600MP

I want to get these speakers for my front doors on my 96 3.2TL: Infinity 6.5"

My question is that will my headunit be able to power these speakers or will I need a seperate amp? I think it should because my headunit has MOSFET 50W x 4 and the speaker's RMS is 50W. But I don't wanna risk anything... That's why I'm asking you guys.

ya that is plenty of power for those speakers. I mean more wouldn't hurt and would make them go louder and sound better, but that is plenty for most listening.

First off NO headunit can put anything more than MAYBE 20W per channel. The Mosfet is just another stupid rating, just like PEAK on any amp. That amp or rating will play that in a lab once at the peak level. Period. It might sound decent.. don't get me wrong, but there is no way that ANY Headunit will play anywhere near as loud as an amp, any amp. Get a cheap ass POS amp that is 50 x 4, rockford fosgate or something and they will play 10x loud and cleaner than the HU can play.

You can probably get something on ebay or somewhere for like $100

you are close to being right...you are right about the "50x4" rating...thats a peak rating so more like 20 or 25 watts. Look in your manual it will say the RMS power. but if you get a cheep ass POX amp it will also be rated at "50x4". If you get an amp, dont go cheep. This way you will know what you are getting, not some marketing numbers.

Mosfet is not another "stupid rating". It stands for Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor. They are transistors that allow amplifiers to run more effecient, despite the confined space of being in the head unit. While not as good as a top quality amp, they will provide cleaner power than most "POS" amps. One thing with head units with Mosfet power is they normally need their power connection straight to the battery with a 12 or 14 awg cable. At least, Alpine recommends that on theirs. I do agree that the 50 x 4 is overstated. Half of that is probably pretty good.

vidoprof is right, the HU is not nearly enough power. You would be lucky if a 50x4 produced half of that at RMS. Normally it's slightly under at around 22. It's ok to power the rear stage off the head unit but you want the fronts or comps to sing. I recommend getting a 125-150x2 amp and feed them slightly over the RMS. Make sure you know the ohms of the speakers and that the amp is rated at 125-150 at the same ohm. Usually speakers and comps are 4 ohm. However, don't get a POS amp, you'll see that decent to quality 150 watt amps can be had for really cheap anyways.

Amps can be had so cheap these days on the internet--less than half of retail for brand new equipment. It's a lot more work, because you have to find a place to mount it and run the wires, but if you're not planning on selling the car in the next year or so it's really worth it. I'm a fan of MTX, and I bought their 564 (560 watts, 4 channels) for $200 on eBay.

Sorry by POS amp I didn't mean a REAL POS. I meant more along the lines of the mainstream stuff. MTX, Rockford, Infinity, Pioneer. I consider JL a pretty good amp, not great but better than the others. I really meant the other as POS, even though they ARE NOT POS, they aren't great and they can be had pretty damn cheap for the dollars.

Ryan.

You can do 100x2 up front or even 50x2 or 50x4 with a decent amp and it will be way better than just the HU..
