Ground Location
Ground Location
I was just wondering where everyone has there amp or amps ground that are mounted in the trunk. I still can not get rid of the whine in my system and I am wondering if it could be the ground location. It is really only noticable when I watch DVD's but on silent or low passages, it is quite loud. I ran new Stinger Bullet RCA's cables and moved them to the right side of the vehicle with the power cable going down the left so, I think I can eliminate that. Any other ideas or opinions. Right now, both my JL amps are ground in the same spot in the spare tire well, scrapped, sanded and shiny. I bought a brand new Eclipse amp for a great price just to see if there was any difference and it is even worse. Thanks for any help.

Just a couple gernal notes: If you have an aftermarket HU, don't use the wiring harness to ground it - make a new ground for it away from other electrical equipment. Don't share your audio equipment grounds w/ non-audio equipment (like fans, neons, etc...).
Shawhite.....Thanks for the tip. I might try a new ground spot or even try running 4 awg ground to that spot and into a distro block. Then 8 awg to each amp.
keeena....Yes, it does change with reving of engine. Yes, I have an Eclipse AV-8022 head unit. I will try running the ground maybe back to the amps? Or just away from the head unit location. I think I tried that before and it did not help. This is a problem I have had to some degree with all the head units I have had.
What about running power for the head unit straight to the battery. Right now, I am using the factory harness for yellow wire constant power. I run straight to the battery in my CRV and have no whine at all. Any thoughts on that??

hey acurax2 i would try redoing the ground first... i am using the metra wiring harness for both my audio/video master unit and my screen and i have no whine problems... if all else fails you might want to look into a ground loop isolator you can find then at any radio shack...
I will try a different ground point first. I have a ground loop isolator. Did nothing to help. What I thought was maybe it was something in the JL amps but, when I tried the new Eclipse EA3422, it was worse than the JL at around the same volume. Thanks.
I am assuming thatyou are running the remote turn on with the power wire to the back. That being said, i have heard of instances albeit very rarely that the speaker wire running to the 4ch amp will carry a low voltage, just enough to cause the rca's to pick up the interference. now theoretically this shouldn't happen under any circumstance, but some have sworn that if eliminated the whine in their cars, so if all else fails you may want to try moving that (i.e. power down the driver's side, speaker wire down the center, and rca's down the pass. side). Personally i would think using a distribution block and relocating the ground to the cross bar along the back seat would eliminate the problem

Well, I tried several different new amp ground locations with no difference at all. That just does not appear to be the problem.
I then took the head unit out, ran a wire from the yellow constant outside the door and around and over to the battery. The whine was gone. So, I ran a 12 awg wire thru the firewall above the brake pedal and weaved it over to the head unit area. Problem is, when I hooked it up to the yellow, some of the noise came back. Not as loud but, still there. Seems like somehow, there is noise entering into the yellow constant wire from somewhere. Almost seems like a radiatted noise but, from where and how can it be fixed? Any ideas now??

where is your headunit grouned to... that whine is a hard thing to track down... was there anything else near that yellow wire when you ran it thru the firewall.. maybe it is picking up interference from another cable..
The headunit is ground to the factory harness. I tried grounding it to the frame where the head unit mounts and I even tried running all the way back to where the amps are ground at. No difference no matter where it was ground at. Not much difference even if it is not even ground.
I ran the 12 awg thru the same hole as my 4 awg. I wonder if they could be picking something up from the factory wiring that runs thru that grommet. It is the one right behind the parking brake. Where did everyone else go thru the firewall at. Maybe that is my problem. Radiated noise at the entrance thru the firewall.

i went thru the fire wall right above the gas pedal.. you will notice a empty grommet that you can use... if you look in the engine bay you will think that it is to high but its not... just look up and towards the center console above the gas pedal and you will see a little round rubber plug... pull that back and punch a whole in that grommet and run your cables thru there..
Thanks Shawhite. I am going to have to get some more 4 awg this week and try that. After running the 12 awg out the passengers door and around to the battery, it does make sense that there is noise radiatting from the factory harness. Hopefully, I can pick up some 4 awg tomorrow. Thanks again.
