you need the receiver (rectangular shaped box, can be mounted in the trunk), which i believe comes with an antenna. then you need to subscribe and that's really it. i know the alpines (like mine) which are XM ready have an alpine specific receiver. i recommend checking online then going to circuit city or best buy to see if you can get one. chances are they don't carry it (at least to my knowledge they only carry the standalone xm receivers), if they don't you can always buy it online somewhere. let us know how it goes.

I was talking to our Alpine rep today, and given what he said, you aren't likely to find any alpine XM tuner boxes anymore unless they are refurbs. This is mainly b/c apine stopped making them all together.

They are the only company right now that has a headunit that has the xm tuner built in, the CDA-9821xm. all you need is the H/U and an antenna. I've done about 20 of them now, and they are a great solution if you are looking for an all in one situation like that.

Basically to answer the origiunal question it would just depend on the headunit you choose as to what you would need

i recommend check crutchfield. they have them listed as in stock if i recall. or check ebay. why the hell would they stop making them when hundreds or people have xm ready decks?

s5nake5: i have never hooked one up to an alpine but i would recommend downloading the manual from the alpine website to make sure you have everything covered. good luck.

There is a host of reasons you would be hard pressed to find them, especially if you went to a local shop.

Starting at the top. When XM first launched they were pump r&d money into Alpine, Pioneer, and Sony to develop xm tuners to work with their decks. As the XM grew though they began to pump out their own recievers and what not. This ment that Pioneer, alipine, and sony cut back production b/c they weren't reciving any kind of kickback for the affiliation (which may or may not be completely true, but given the next fact you'll see why i believe it to be true)

During a period of 1 yr at CC, i waqs able to track the number of alpine tuners in the entire company. the count: 7. Pioneers wen't much more plentiful, and sony. . . .well to this day i have still never seen one.

The other reason why Alpine isn't producing the current versin of their xm tuner is that they are about to release a new versin that is either xm or sirius capable (my understanding is that you can have one or the other, but not both). There is also a great deal of stuff that will be unveiled in the not so distant future regarding satellite radio.

Now back to the original point of the thread:
S5snake5: What kind of radio is it that you are using, and which tuner pack are you trying to connect?

Ahhh here is an easy, cheap way to connect it and not have to use an fm modulater. Go to a local shop (not BB or CC) and get the cdrb-10 (i think that is the correct model number, but i might have the letters wrong). Basically it is a piece that plugs into the p-bus slot on the back of the radio and creates an auxillary input (if all else fails ask them for the peice that goes p-bus to rca input). it shouldn't cost more than 25 bucks. then get a headphone to rca plug from radioshack ( it shouldn't cost but a few dollars). after that all you need to do is get some rca's long enough to go from where you mounted the skyfi unit, to the back of the radio (i imagine you will probably only need 3-6ft worth of rca's)

now the fun begins. the skyfi unit is hooked up and outputing audio to the radio. If I remember correctly on that radio you don't have to turn on the aux source, it should turn it's self on as soon as you plug it all up. so all you will have to do to listen to xm is hit your source button (much like if you were switching between the cd and the radio) until you arrive at AUX. that ought to be all you need to do, but if it doesn't work post up what happened here and i'll trouble shoot it for you. enjoy
