front speakers
front speakers
hey guys i am interested in upgrading the front speakers in my 99 Cl but I am low on funds....
I was looking a some component systems and the are kind of pricey....plus the come with their own xovers which look tough to install.....
can I just get a decent speaker and use the existing tweeter on the dash???
will it work?
I'm not looking to win any competition with my system I just want it to sound a little better...
Thanks

You can get Panasonic 5 3/4 component for less than 50 from www.crutchfield.com and keep the stock tweeters. Adding coaxial speakers (tweeters built in) and keep stock tweeters will be a mess since you got 2 sources of high frequencies coming from different angles and distances.
I got MB quart reference line 6 1/2" coaxials instead of separates and it sounds really good. Having had components in the past (MB quart spearates, Soundstream separates, Boston separates) with tweeters mounted high or on the dash, I can say that the coaxials actually provide a more realistic sounds stage. It sounds unbelievable and I don't know if it's because of the interior properties of the CL or because having tweeters shooting off high frequencies (which are frequently too bright) is not natural but the coaxials sounded a lot better. Maybe it just depends on the speaker.
And some people like bright highs at head level but I was just thinking you could maybe get away with coaxials - although the mb quarts are still more expensive than some component systems.

In my previous post, I said 5 3/4 but actually 5 1/4.
They were on clearance, that's why they were 50 bucks + shipping. I had them in a car for about 1 month then moved them out for MB Quart components. They sounded a lot better than the stock. The only minus thing is they are a little smaller than the opening which can fixed by a spacer or adhesive weather strip for doors.
If you want them, make me an offer.

I dont recommend using 2 high frequencies sources. If you wanna keep stock tweeters, you will have to go with a component set.
If you want to use coaxial as suggested by "low post", I think it is best to disconnect the stock tweeters.
As far as my opinions go, I have only tried Sony, Panasonic and MB Quart components but not coaxial.
Maybe the other guys can jump in and give you some suggestions. Good luck.
