External GPS antenna..
External GPS antenna..
I have a Garmin Ique and its kind of annoying the way i have to put it in my car using the beanbag mount.. i was thinking of using one of the external antennas i have seen for it, but i was wondering if anybody had used one and knew if you could really tell the difference between the $20 ones and the $70 garmin one..
There are lots of threads on antennas at the very active PDA Street iQue forum, http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/foru...hp?forumid=108.
As I recall, the $20 Gilsson antenna is highly regarded and the company has good service. I suspect there are some comparisons of the Garmin and Gilsson, but apparently no significant difference in performance. Both antennas are active (have an amplifier) and reception is much better than with the internal iQue antenna. The "con" is that an external antenna is yet another connection to make when swapping the iQue in and out of the car.
There are lots of discussions there about various mounts and mounting methods. The iQue is my spouse's, and I made a custom bracket for her car with a velcro mount for the Garmin auto base (no beanbag). When it's temporarily in my TSX I use the beanbag which works mostly. I'd buy an extra Garmin mount base (about $12) if I used it often and skip the beanbag.

I just did a quick look on the PDA Street forum, and there's a thread with specific comments on Gilsson ($20) vs. Garmin ($70). The Gilsson is strongly favored for performance in addition to excellent value.
