Do I have too?

I want to replace the stock speakers in my cl-s, and want to know if I have to get a new amp to run the 6x9's, mids, and highs? I'm pretty much looking to spend the least amount of money as possible, but will spend more if i have too. I don't want a sub in my trunk, just want better sound quality out of what I have in the car. Tell me what you think?

Dude, it's like this.... If you get good speakers, you will need an amp. An amp doesn't only make music louder, it makes cleaner and better at low levels. But for good sound quality, it's a very good idea to replace the Head unit as well. But to answer your question, if you are changes all the speakers, you will need an amp.

Yes, you need an amp... not necessarily for reasons mentioned above, but because the stock amp will not power 4 ohm speakers. The stock speakers are 1-2 ohm, so 4 ohm speakers play about half as loud as the stock system does.

And replacing the headunit is WAY overrated. But you can find threads on that if you look. I won't get into that now.

Replacing the stock headunit is a very good way to go. The factory speakers are supposed to be roughly 1 ohm, nominally. Your factory amp is built to run those speakers at rought 25 watts. Aftermarket speakers are typically 4 ohms, and that would mean that you would get rought 1/4 the power, or 6-7 watts to each speaker. That is really not enough to push many speakers. If you change your headunit, you'll get about 15 watts per channel, and that can drive many aftermarket speakers. A lot of speakers will sound better with an amp, but not all people need that.
