difference between class d and class a/b amps
wondering what the difference between these two classes are.
if you have a car audio setup where all things are equal except for the class of the amps, would there be an audible difference.
if you have a 1000 watt mono class d connected to a jlw7
vs
1000 watt class a/b connected to the same jlw7
which would sound clearer, crisper, louder? what would the differences be.

It's based on the power handling, a mono class D handles power better for most bass applications, whereas an A/B is a wider range, and therefore if you're using it for bass only you have to tweak the crossover to run as a low pass only. If you're lookin for a sub amp, class D mono is the only way to go, you're most likely not gonna push 1000 w out of an a/b amp, especially if it's more than one channel

In addition, D is much more efficient than A/B and an A/B amp also probably costs at least 5 times as much as a D for the same freq. range & power output. D amps only support bandwidths/freqs up to a certain point because they're inherently switching-based vs. analog amplification (A/B). Switching is okay for low frequencies because your sample rate doesn't have to be that high & most distortion is acceptable (since it's bass & will most-likely be lpf'd), but if you wanted a full range D amp, you'd need a much higher sample rate but you'll probably introduce so much noise & distortion that for the application at hand (audio) it's pointless.
So the general idea is:
Class D = sub-bass
Class A/B = everything above
But to answer your questions, with your jlw7, I would guess
clearer = A/B
crisper = A/B
louder = either
but the main thing you should be concerned about is:
cheaper = definitely D

well the reason i ask is because, one of the local car audio shops sold me an a/b mono amp (500rms) for my sub. It's good but i'm thinking i want to change. currently i'm running that class a/b california amp with a 10" type r sub.
starting to think i want about 1000 watts rms approx. I dont always listen to bass that loud but there are times I just want the bass to Fk'n pound!!! and i dont get that right now.
which part should i upgrade first?
get rid of this a/b amp or new sub or both?
