Cap Question??

So I am on my way to work this morning and I had it cranked pretty good. I notice that my Image Chameleon 5 1/4 start breaking up and popping because of the volume. So, I change the xover from 80 to 120. It seems to fix that. So, I crank it back up and notice that my dash lights are dancing a bit to the music. Is it time for a cap? Will a cap help the Chameleons as well. I just thought the Chameleons should handle 80 and up with ease. Any help or advice?? Thanks.

The lights dimming with only the one 10L7. Not good. And I am thinking of getting rid of it and getting a pair of dual 2 ohm 10L7.

thats normal I got a cap and that still happens. you are pulling 700watts for the bass so its expected. the popping for the ID??? hmm I dunno at 80hz it should happen either. Ok I just looked up your amperage rating on your amps and your 6500d can pull up to 75 amps and the other amp can pull up to 50 amps. A cap will help a little though. I have a 200 dollar cap and my dash lights still flicker a lil bit at night. I ahve heard people wit Red Top batteries say it helped alot. But I was always told the car dosnt use the battery after it starts it depends on the alt??? Theres people on this forum that are using more powerful amps and still have kept there factory bat and alt so i guess it might not be doing harm.;

Caps are almost strictly used for musical "peaks". They don't help with the day to day issues of running the system. They're not going to help the flickering problem. Turning down the volume when the lights/heat is on or getting a bigger alternator will. The Cap will help when you need to hit really hard and there just isn't enough there.

The IDs shouldn't be breaking up at 80hz!! If mine do I'm going to friggin scream! Mine will be crossed over at 90 which should be more than enough to let them jam. This is kind of why I wanted to go with the 6.5s instead. I just don't trust 5.25s. I hope you/we can figure this one out!!!

Can you describe the sound they're making? The music you're listening to? How much CLEAN power they're receiving? (I know I've read about your system but I don't remember all the details

I'm as interested in the responses as you are since I have the same speakers in my front doors.

But, the problem I am having is the musical peaks. I was listening to Britanny Spear's version of "I Love Rock and Roll". This is a great tune for the punchy bass test. Ever time the big bass would hit is when the lights would twitch and when the Chameleons would pop. From everything I have read, this is exactly what a cap is suppose to help with. I guess we will see. I have one on the way. Will be here Wednesday.

I am running around 115 watts to the Chameleons. It is from a MTX 6304. Should not be an amp problem. Although, my JL 300/4 puts only 75 watts and I have not had the problem with them. I need to maybe try some A/B testing with the amps.

I am not sure how to describe the noise. It almost sounds like the speakers are cutting out or something but, just for a millisecond. It is weird.

Your amp is clipping. Turn down the gain.

Brewboy....Thanks for the suggestion. You may be right. I never thought of that. I will have to give it a try. It just seems that the amp should play louder than that but, maybe not.
