Can someone explain the "real world" differences in these subs???
Can someone explain the "real world" differences in these subs???
AW1206Q
That sub and this one
AW1208Q
The first one has 120oz mag, and 1100 watt RMS handeling capability. and can be used in 2ohm or 8 ohm...
The second has 280 oz mag, and 1500 watt RMS hadeling capability, and it can be used in 1ohm or 4ohm...
So, with a 500 watt amp, would the 2 sound the same? What impact does the size of the mag have and with the power rateing, i see junk pyramid amps with 1000 watt rateings, so I dont know how to judge what is good, what i need. With the subs, does the second one require more power to put out the same sound, or can it put out more sound...

damm u need at least a 1500 watts amps to power the because the rms is high a 500 watt amp won't b as good and if u get a cheap amp it will blow the amp get a good one if u only wat 500 watts hope the help u a little
The latter has a wider voice coil and much larger static magnet and will thus offer more control of the cone movement at the same power outputs (linearity). It should also have quite a bit more excursion at rms wattage and will be substantially louder.

the sub with the lower rms rating will sound louder because there is less resistance there and thus will provide more movement of the cone and give u more thump. But in any case a 500w amp i feel will be too weak for either of these subs.
I talked to the guys at crutchfield, and this is what they said. They said to tell how tight or loose the bass will be you need to look at the effiecency or sensitivity... That is how loud the speaker will be at 1 watt. doubling the wattage adds 3db. So a sensitivity arround 95db only needs 128watts to out out 116db... and it is power rated really high b/c it has such a large surround it can move a LOT. This type of speaker will be very boomy and good if you want to rattle everyones china out of the closet as you drive by.
A Alpine Type R or a JL has a sensitiviy of 85 or 86db, which means that in order to get 115 db of sound you will need 1024 watts. The magnet structure and spider holds the cone much tighter, which gives it much more control over the cone, so it will give much cleaner bass, tight hitting bass....
