building a ported box

I am going to build a ported box, this is the first time i ever built a box for a sub.
I have some information from the company
1.75 cu.ft. (give freq of 28Hz)
16 sq in vent, 16.5 in long

I'm under the impression that as long as the internal volume of the box is 1.75 cu.ft. (minus the port and any internal wood reinforcement), then its fine.
However, i'm kind of confused about the port. The box won't be 16.5 in long, so its going to go along the side, then along the back, how do i calculate this so to stay within the specs they gave?? Also, its says 16sq. in vent, so any combo that gives me a 16 sq in hole will work?
All help appreciated.
