My N-1 has just gone out of warranty, I use it daily....

Last week, the screen wouldn't display anything... I opened and closed it several times, and eventually it re-appeared....

This repeated until the screen never turned on.... I still hear sounds when I touch, but it's blank...

Additonally, I've intermittantly lost the mute (ATT) and source button functionality.

A hard reset does not solve the issues.

If I press the button to extend the screen, but keep it horizontal, I see a small ribbon cable that connects the display to the main unit.... If I push or pull on the ribbon, it seems to either return or lose the mute (ATT) and source button functionality, and sometimes joystick functionality as well....

I'm guessing this ribbon is damaged, and also feeds the lcd moniter it's display information.

I've called pioneer to order a new one, but they cannot identify the part.

Can anyone help? I think I can repair this myself (mechanical engineer) and save a fair portion of the $200 Pioneer would like to repair it....

It's definitely the ribbon. I remember having flip down face decks that had the same problem.

If you're willing to live without putting the screen in and out. You might want to try to turn the manual flip out mode to off on the screen. To get there. Just turn the deck off, and press the right knob in. Then when you get it to work. Just leave the screen out permenently. Otherwise, I would probably just have Pioneer fix it, unless you can get a replacement ribbon somewhere that has the exact same signals.
