Exclamation Auto relay question!!!

Hi Guys,

I was wondering what kind of relay everybody is using...
I'm close to finishing my mod which includes changing the front door speakers, adding 2 amps and a sub.

I wanted to add a relay to turn on/off the amps when the HU is turned on/off. I found out that the remote turn on lead from the HU provides about 3.9VDC, which is too less for most of the aftermarket amps(which basically use 6VDC). The relay I found in Radio Shack has the turn on voltage of 6VDC so I guess it won't be enough. Also the most common auto relay (Bosch type 12V, 30A) had the turn on voltage of 8VDC.

Currently my amps are turned on/oof with the ignition switch.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks

Doesn't Radio Shack sell SCR's any more? That might work with the proper setup.

Ooops my bad, an SCR would turn the amps on with the amp signal but won't switch off until input power drops. Plus they put off way too much heat.

I guess a relay is the best choice, try http://www.relays-unlimited.com , they might have what you need.

ash3ktl... that bosch relay should work just fine... basically all you need is a misc auto relay (single pole double throw)... you can find them at any auto parts store for less than $20... i had one that came with my alumapro cap so i didnt have to go buy one...

Ash,
The common Bosch auto relay won't work because the remote doesn't have enough output to trigger it.
1. PM Ron (Streeteffectz) - he said awhile back he found a microrelay from Radio Shack that is small enough to work with the remote.
2. Use a transistor to trigger the relay.

I was too lazy so I just tied the amps to a switched 12V and never turn off the HU. I never got around to rewiring it the proper way. If you get a part number and it works, please post it.

PS. What ED sub are you using. I've got an 12O in 1.5 cubes. How's the Koda's and sub working out?
good luck

I had that problem last week and here is the solution

1st the remote you are using is 12v when you read it with a meter(mine was)
- but the remote isn't enough to turn the amp on so you thought of a relay(same here)
- the relay is connected but it doesn't work why? here it is.
- the relay needs 3.?v to activate the relay.
- the remote was over that right? for some reason when the relay was attached the remote wire was only putting out 1-2v of power. I don't know why it was driving me insane. So here is what I did.
I wanted to use the relay still, because it would still use less power from the stock setup if you use a relay. so I ran a remote wire from my fuse box to the relay by the stock amp. attach the relay wire to the yellow wire with two gray stripes. THERE IS TWO OF THEM IN THE SAME CLIP, so the one I used was the one second wire from the bottom when the clip is plugged in. This wire will not turn on with the radio on the first click of your key but it will turn on with the second click ( I like this option because if you are cleaning your car, and you don't want to drain your battery you can listen without the bass and if you want to click the key foward the sub will turn on. the best of both worlds) works for drive-ins as well. Remember this will only work if you are adding a sub. If you are replacing your whole system (adding door speakers and amp for the door spaekers) obviously only the stock system will turn on with the first click and the aftermarket sys will turn after the second click and always when running. I hope this helped this was my problem last week and I was going to radio shack and then insane when the relay didn't work. Some one else posted that he used a really sensitive computer relay and that seemed to work. I 'm not sure if the relay would be more $$ because it is for a comp or if it might be harder to find. I hope you hear the bass soon it sounds sooooooo good in this car. Keep us posted on how it sounds.

Have a Great LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOng Weekend !!!!

Thanks guys,

That is realy helpfull. I'll try all the alternatives today and let you know.

Brewboy,

'm also using ED 12O. Its 12O.14 in 1.2Cf box. Its new, has been broked yet, but sounds awesome. Kodas are too good. I can go as low as 50Hz. They have laid back , warm sound. The tweats are a little bright for me (metal dome), but they are very detailed. I'm going to try to attenuate them with low ohm resisters. Well the good news is Kodas fit. I'm using 1" spacer rings. I have some trouble with the door panel clips. One clip of each door is not fitting. But I'm sure if I do it correctly they'll fit.

Thanks again.
