From: where the weather suits my clothes
CDT Audio - I'm getting the CDT HD62DT-S (6.5" comps)
Diamond Audio - the Hex's are really nice
ADS - was my second choice

Most 6.5" comps will fit. I would say stay under 3" mounting depth and you should be ok. You'll have to build an MDF backer plate to mount them, but it's pretty easy to do.

Consider the Pioneer PREMIER Series PRS components if you are on a budget....they aren't cheap either (we have them for like $550), but they include a pair of 6.5" mids, pair of 1" tweeters, and pair of titanuim crossovers.

I put these in Vic's TL and they sound incredible. I love focal and diamond audio and all those myself, but when I heard these, I was amazed. You have to hear them.

My personal favorites are the Diamond Audio Hex from a few years ago, the 98 series when they were made by Eton. You could probably find them on Ebay relatively cheap, if you were willing to go that route. I like the sound of the MB Quart Referenz and Q, but that seems to be a pretty common opinion.

If you're not into spending a lot, I've heard a lot of people like the CDTs, and I personally like the Boston Acoustics ProSeries, I think they are a good alternative to the MB Quarts and cost less. If you can find them, Alpine's components aren't bad. The DDrive components sound pretty good, but they're scarce - at least from what I've seen. Hope that helps.

Why comps in the rear doors? They rears are just for fill and should be gained down compared to the front stage. Most high-end SQ installs only run a front stage and sub. Save your money and get a really nice SQ front combo and lower budget rears for fill.

Sort of true, except that we are talking about a sedan here and not a coupe. So the rear speakers may not be just for fill (for the driver), at least not if you like the people in the back seat.

In my Integra coupe I have a very front soundstage (leaving in the stock speakers in the back for fill), but in my TL it's more or less centered. I didn't put comps in the rear but I did put in MB Quart separate coaxials, which sound quite nice.

True, rears are for fills in a competition type, or coupe/hatchback vehicle. But if you have a sedan, and expect ppl to site in the back frequently, what's the harm in getting good quality compos for the rear also? If you have the money, spend the money.

Don't you like my sidebar graphic?? Nobody Steal it, dangit (like you guys did with my animated Homer).

I AM a unique and special snowflake.

nothing "wrong" with having 4 component speakers. The backs don't always have to be for rear fill just because the pros do it in competition.

maybe people just want louder music from their cars? ever think of that? 4 component speakers are louder than 2.

Component speakers aren't "louder"... amplification makes things louder (and bigger speakers handle more amplification). Having component speakers is for improved imaging and purity of tone: sound quality, not quantity.

People who use their back speakers for "rear fill" set them to a lower amplification than the front speakers to create a front soundstage (so most of the sound comes from the front). As a corollary, since the rear speakers are not used for imaging, why bother spending the $500+ for components in the rear.

I agree that having a front soundstage doesn't necessarily make sense in a sedan if you frequently have passengers in the back and would like them to have decent sound quality. But "loudness" has nothing to do with it.

Thanks for the images, Genghis! I'll spend more time later cleaning up the image...right now you can barely make out who it is.

I really don't think you need to spend a lot on rear fill components, either, since you're imaging and staging to the front of your car. If you had a limo or a larger SUV and wanted to give the backseat passengers a good set of speakers, that would be another thing.

There's a lot of people, competitors and consumers, who don't believe in any rear fill at all so as not to pull away from the front stage. While I don't subscribe to this theory completely, I still think that a mid-sized car such as the TL could use some mid-range and high in the rear, mostly for backseat passengers, not so much for the enjoyment of the folks in the front seat. If you're going with a passive crossover, just set the attenuation down a few dbs (I think the MB Quarts and Bostons have -6db) and set the rear gain from the amplifier down, if you can do that. That should help to prevent it from intruding on your front stage.

Hope that helps!
