Audio question..

so im still rockin my stock audio set up from when i bought the car ( i know ghetto ) ..my buddy has some speakers that he wants to sell to me just for the time being till i get the money to upgrade the whole sound system in the car. I searched for the size of the front door speakers for my car & i found out that they're 5.25 but in 98 they're 6.5s, is that right?

If that's right, would i be able to put 6.5s in the front doors if i wanted to or no? Im an audio so i dont know the first thing about it

yes they are 6.5s, i have 6.5's in my 97, i think they usually say to put in 5.25's because of the shallow mounting depth, so if the speakers have a big magnet they will hit the glass when it's inside your door. Mine however are really close to my glass but not touching it, if they were to hit the glass, then you would need to get some spacers to put the magnet bottom further away from the glass.

to avoid having to use spacers, check if the mouting depth is less than 2-7/16" (it's the measurement from the bottom of the magnet to the bottom of the mounting holes) that is the measurement of mine with no spacers, and it is literally a couple mm away from my window when it's down.

There is a basket that protects the magnet from hitting the glass, the problem is if the mounting depth is too deep, you need to remove it, I did and have no problems

But if you didn't remove the back of the basket, then your magents aren't that close to the glass

oh sorry, forgot that part, yes my basket bottom was taken off, well more like melted/cut off.
...Nvm just disregard my other post, we might have done other things for the front speakers that i can't remember right now, as the magnets are a few mm away from the glass, but my speakers aren't that deep at all

So that's the maximum depth you can have without having to cut the basket? I'm about to buy some speakers too and don't want to hack up the doors.

Also while we're on this topic. Does anyone know if the factory tweeters are useless with an aftermarket deck or are they wired to the door speakers? I was wondering if mine still functioned, or if it would be better to get a door speakers with the built in component system.

the factory tweets are wired in with the door speakers... long story about how i figured this out, but they are... if you're thinking about getting component speakers (separates, i've seen them called) this is a good idea, but again, watch the mounting depth... also, if you're going with comps, make sure you have an external amp to power them with as an aftermarket h/u won't be enough... but even a 2-way or 3-way speaker will be an improvement over stock...

Stock dome tweeters are split off the same channel as the door speakers, I replaced my tweeters and door speakers with matched components and the difference was night and day even on the stock wiring.

Awesome, thanks guys. On crutchfield.com, they show no tweeters are a direct replacement. What size will fit?

I could barely get the tweeter out of the passenger's side, and the driver's side tweeter is still just sitting in there... I know it's ghetto, but I can't get the tweeter out... So i'm going to say that no aftermarket tweeter will fit in the factory place...

^i got aftermarkets in mine, replaced the factory ones. A custom mounting bracket had to be made to hold them in place. But they do fit and work, and mine are 1". But i find that atleast with mine, with them hitting off the front glass and the sound basically boucing right to your ears, it's much to bright for me, and my boston speakers are not known to be bright or ear piercing at all. I even had to turn the tweeter crossover signal to it's lowest power setting just to make them bearable. If i were to do it again, i'd just get coax's as there is more than enough room in the stock speaker locations for them, just my tho

I think the stock ones are 3/4" if not then 1/2" I put 1" silk dome tweeters in, just had to trim the screw hole mounts

From: is everything.
I put Alpine Type-R component tweeters in my stock tweeter location without a problem at all, went in like butter.
