Talking Audio Guru's...some help with JL 12W7's please

Hi, I'm looking at buying 2 JL Audio 12W7's pretty soon (yes, I know, I'm a basshead lol!!!). What amps would compliment these the best? What amps could power these beasts at the lowest price, but still with good quality? I appreciate any input, so lets hear it!!

if you are going to go that route w/ the top end subs, no use being stingy w/the amps. Id say get 2 500/1's or a 1000/1. Your sound system is as good as the worst component in my opinion.

your goin with expensive subs and being cheap on the amps?
the amps are the most important thing in a subwoffer setup.
you gatta spend $$ on amps if you wanna have over a 2000 watt system
i say get 2 1000/1 amps on each subwoofer.

no, I wasn't saying I wanted to get cheap amps because I know what amps are good quality (i know the 500/1 and 1000/1 amps are great) I meant to say that I wanted to know the cheapest place to get them...probably eBay. I was basically just asking what amps would be the best for those subs. Price really doesn't matter. Does this change any of your suggestions??

Wow, did you mean (2) 1000/1 amps PER sub or just one of these amps on each sub??

i think he was sayin one 1000/1 per subwoofer. The cheapest place i know of is eBay but be careful

ok well I guess that's it then... I think that I'm going to get (2) 12W7's and (2) 500/1's hopefully by then end of April.

First of all I think the W7 is way overpriced. But despite my opinions...2 500/1 on 2 12W7s would be underpowering them. Underpowering subs can cause clipping, wich is BAD. If you want really clean power, go with class a/b amplifier. Class d is much more efficient, but it is also not as clean. If I were you I would check out some amps besides JL. If you want to stay in the class d range...jbl bpx2200.1 is a nice amp to power 2 12W7s. Also consider Diamond Audio D7 series. Last but not least look at US Amps. They are awesome amps, and are very reasonably priced.
In real terms...you would need 2 JL 1000/1 amps to power 2 JLW7s. That puts you in the spending range of $1700-$2000+. I have seen the JBL BPX2200.1 on ebay myself go for $700 new.

Just got my JL 10W7 Prowedge for $348 with tax!!!! Woo hoo. Plus, the Jl 500/1 that I am hooking it up to was only $280. Love having a roommate who's father owns part of a audio/video shop. Everything at cost. Plus, its brand new and has warranties, which is great.

I would put a 1000/1 on a 12W7, not a 500/1. I agree with the guy above.

I have a 12 w7 with a 500/1. I have been running this setup for almost two years.
But if you are a bass head look in to RE Audio. I just installed a 15"re sx in a friends car with 1200 watts and that shit is crazy. I would highly recomend doing 2 lighter weight 12's and 2000 watts. Look at the 12" RE SX and JBL 2200 amp.

i was sayin to get 2 1/1000 for each sub,
orion makes a great amp that is 5000 watts
thast what you should get if u wanna get one amp.
if you need a price i wil ask my dealer
i jus recently upgraded from 2 12" 7500 mtx thunder with 800 watt amp to 1 12 mtx thunder 9500, to 1 15" 9500 with the mtx 8100 class d amp(1800 watt). the two 12 w7's compare to the 9500's so get a amp that will nto underpower them . remeber this audio upgrades are addicting, its worse then drugs.

If im not mistaken the mtx 8100D is 1000w rms and 1500w rms at a higher voltage...i think 14.4v right? I hope you dont have to recone those 9500s 5000w is kinda overkill, and you would have to change your power supply dramaticly. Not to mention i am iffy in the orion sq....thd level etc. re sx is a nice touch though....us amps makes a 2000x amp...rated at 2400w rms at class a/b. That would DEF be cleaner than any orion, jbl/crown bpx series.

Ok, so let me get this straight, you're saying that (1) JBL BPX2200.1 will be able to power both of my 12W7's, or that I would need (1) JBL BPX2200.1 per 12W7? Because it's only a one channel amp I think, so how would I be able to hook up both subs to a one channel amp?

Zapco C2K 9.0 amp, hands down...you want power and at a consistant rate with confidence...well over 2000 watts rms...definitely my way to go seeing that I have a similar setup in my car...running 3 12" W7's off 2 Zapco C2K 9.0 amps...

Another amp I highly recomend is the Rockford Fosgate 1001bd mono amp. It puts out at least over 1100 watts mono into 2ohms. I had my birthsheet at just over 1200watts into 2ohms. I have one and I am amaze how strong and accurate the power delivers to the sub. I think it would be perfect for your JL subs. But you can't go wrong with JL 1000/1.

its not dangerous if you underpower the sub, but it is if you overpower it.....before anyone jumps on me, i'm just saying what i read STRAIGHT from the jl website.

click where it says data sheet for this model, and you will see right under the graph that shows the optimal wattage you should be sending to the sub.

i have 1 12w7jl sub and using a 250/1 jl amp and it sounds great also i have a 300/4 jl amp on 2 sets of boston z6 components and a audiocontrol eqxII eq. all on a factory head unit and no complaints out of me

wow, that sub can handle A LOT more power.....if you're happy w/ the sound then that's good, but just fiy, you can make it bump a lot more w/ a more powerful amp.

I've never ran that sub, people w/ personal experience would probably know better, but some good possibilities would be (now, these amps are fairly expensive, but since you have a w7 you should probably go w/ something good quality):

zapco reference 750.2 - one per sub (can be found at woofersetc.com)

usamps 2000x - one for both subs if run into 3ohm (can be found at speedsound.com) <---w7 can be run at 3 ohm, right?

Of course, i'm sure some jl amps will run that sub perfectly, since its the same company, like the 500/1.

My set up consists of two subs that handle similar amount of power as the 12w7, they run rms 750 watts (treo's), and i'm powering them with a usamp 1000X....however, i'll be sending about 550 watts to each sub, meaning there is room to give it more power. Personally, i am fine w/ feeding them 550 a piece, because i know it'll still be clean, plus that set up was quite cheaper.

bdv687, are you wanting more SPL or SQ. The reason I ask is because if you want it to sound better in quality then go with the JL Audio 12w6v2, if you want more bass, then go with the JL Audio 12w7. I have been in the Car Audio business for years and I have been a competitor for years, and you can not go wrong with JL Audio. They make some of the best subs periord for Car Audio. In one of the Car Audio and Electronic magazines, they rate the 12w6v2 subs as one of the best they have ever tested. In my new system that I am putting in my car for competition, I am putting 2 12w6v2s. You will be fine with 500/1 amp on each sub or a 1000/1 on both, but the sub would sound better with a 1000/1 on each sub. Class D amps do awesome for power, A/B are better for sound. You will be happy with the JL Audio amps. I will be actually powering my subs with ARC Audio 2150 XXK series. You can pick these up from EBAY for cheaper than they retail, I think they retail for over $900. They are awesome amps, and they are A/B. If you have any questions or need help, just pm. I don't mind helping others. I am also sponsored by ARC Audio.
