Post Anyone replaced the door speakers and not the amp.?

I am just wondering because I want to replace the speakers in my wife's MDX with some decent speakers. Since the MDX's system is similar to the TL's, I am just wondering what your experience is. I remember someone said that the stock headunit puts out about 12-15watts rms to the door speaers, if that is so, it should be enough to drive most, if not all aftermarket speakers, even high-end ones.

Question

Yeah,

I need to know as well. There's some excellent 6.5" 3-way speaker on the web, but didn't want to buy unless I was sure it would work. DON'T WANT TO REPLACE ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE SPEAKERS!!!No HU or amps or purchase a line-out converter. Just speakers! This modding bug is getting out of control...can you say crack!

I replaced all of my speakers with Boston Pro's. It sounds nice but I am definately getting an amp to push them. Running right off the deck just does not give them enough power. Also these are the same Boston's that I had in the truck when they were pushed with a Xtant amp.

If the speakers are 1 ohm ( I have no clue if they are), then there wont be enough power to push any aftermarket speaker. Almost all aftermarket speakers are 4 ohms, that means only about 3 watts per speaker. I never heard of any speaker that ran with only 3 watts and sound good. Hope I'm wrong though, cause replace stock speaker would be alot easier.

Talking

A friend of mine just added tweeters to the stock set up and they work perfectly. I don't know if the zohm load would affect a tweeter but if he got it to work then I think any speaker except infinity Kappas and Polk DBs etc that need a minimun of 8 rms would sound great. most aftermarket nedd at least 2 rms. I think the Ohm thing ws different when acura used the Bose speaker that were amped at the speaker itself. If we have an amp I dont think it would push a 1 ohm load. Maybe just the sub woofer. Is there a way to measure the ohm load at the speaker terminals? Streeteffectz are you there?

OK just checked out my stock speakers and they are printed on the back 4 ohm. I measured them with a Fluke Multimeter and it read 3.8 ohm. So close enough...4ohms

Thanks. That's pretty good. Most highend speakers, including Boston Pros are rated at 3ohms. That means it will make your stock amp kick out extra power, hope the stocky can handle it though.

Question

So what kind and brand of speaker were you thinking to use? Any depth mounting problems?

Unless you get an aftermarket amplifier, I would not bothering swapping out the stock speakers.

That's why I never did it because I know it won't sound good. 10 watt of stock stereo power and 10 watt of Orion amplifier is a world of a difference.

You're kind of in the wrong place for this anyhow. Your assumption that the TL and MD-X systems are similar is bad. The TL has an external EQ that gets pumped back into the head unit and amplified. Then 4 channels of speaker level output go to the door speakers, and one channel of line level goes to a separate amp for the sub woofer.

For the MD-X it depends weather you have the premium sound system or not.
For base sound system:
The MD-X head unit puts out 4 channels of line level that goes to an external amp/eq. The amp puts out 4 channels of speaker level (the tweeters run off of the front door speaker line). The rear passenger side door speaker is tapped to another amp which feeds the sub woofer.
For the premium system:
The head unit puts out 4 channels of line level to an amp that puts out 4 channels of speaker level and one channel of line level. The speaker level signals are routed the same as before, but the 5th channel is then routed to the sub woofer amp. The sub woofer amp then feeds the sub and the rear roof tweeter.

You can replace the amps for either MD-X system, but good luck fitting a new one into the space of the old one!

I have an MDX with the base (non-Bose) system. Looking at the Helms manual, it appears that, contrary to the previous post, the amplifier for the front and rear speakers are built into the head unit. This would mean line level signal for an external amp is not easily available. If this is incorrect, please respond, since I would love to upgrade the amps.

WOW I just put in my Clarion Auto PC and hooked them up to my Boston's and WHOA what a difference from my stock deck. Sounds 10 times better. The Auto PC is rated at 35x4 but of course that is still deck power. I should be getting my Rockford amp hopefully by Friday so I can install it this weekend.
