Another choice

One more choice i have to make. What sub do I want.
Should I keep my SOlobaric L5 and put it in a sealed enclousure or get 12"
ALpine Type R
Diamond Audio CM3
Infinity Kappa Perfect

I will take any suggestions. I kinda want it to be loud when i want it to be and it also has to be a Dual 2 ohm or a single 4 ohm. THat knocks the JLw6v2 out.

IDQ 12" D2 V.2 or step up to the 12" dual 2 ohm IDMAX if you've got the coin and can find one.

Honestly, I do not think you could go wrong with any of those subs. They are all good for what ails ya, hehe. Personally, I will either stick with my Kicker or go to Image Dynamics but, that is strictly a personal choice.

I was just lookin at the specs of the IDQ and they sound pretty good. Ill think of 2 12 IDQ's. How about anything else that comes to mind. I wanted to stay with single wooofer. I have 600 watts to play with. If i stay with my sinlge woofer choice it might be the Infinity.

did some more research and, wow the IDQs have alot of excursion and lots of cone area compared to some of its competition. But then again I am like. Why need two subs when one does the job.

ACurax2 does your body panels vibrate with that one 10.

Which 10" are you talking about? I have a 10" ID sub in the MDX a the 10" L7 that is sometimes in the TL. The ID sub sounds great. Of course, it only has 150 watts but, it is plenty of bass for me in the open SUV. The Kicker would rattle a bit. I am sure with the right music it would rattle alot more. Nothing that sound damping the trunk would not fix. Hope that helps. I am actually kicking around getting rid of the Kicker and getting a 12" IDMAX. I bought a JL 500/1 that should arrive mid to end of next week. I will have 500 clean watts for whatever sub or subs I want. I just can not decide which sub or subs to go with.

Definately go with IDQ! I have one 10 inch IDQ ported with 400 watts going to it and it sounds great. Also, SPL is very impressive too. I haven't done any official measurements in sound levels, but it's enough that you can feel your hair moving.

The $500 Image Sub with lots of excusrion???? WOW thats gonna be awsome X2. Tonight one guy just listened to my car and might buy my system. Since I paid retail I am taking a 400 dollar loss. I am selling my fosgate 550s and solobaric with the expensive vented box for $500. Theres so many subs that I wanna buy but cant make up my mind just yet.

I know what you mean. In the pursuit of the "all perfect system" there are just too many choices. I am going to make a new box for the Kicker and try it first. I am going to make something like what you had with the sealed box in left front corner.

ok do u think this is doing any damage to the car. I still listen to some rap and i have times where i play mu music loud, really loud and I can see the Dashboard and the windshield whipers bounce. I seen car where hood where flexing and vibrating , but is this doing any damage to the TL. My friend say I might bend the roof or somthing on my car. My roof vibrates really bad. I put a basketball up there and it bounced 2-3 inches off the roof.

I might be thinking of 2 10s now.

If you have the music that loud 24/7, I might be worried. For a few minutes or even an hour a day. I do not see any problem. Besides, put a basketball up there and make it dance and you are sure to draw a crowd.

If you've already got the L5, why do you want to replace it? Are you not happy with its performance? Is it in a properly built enclosure? I would think an L5 in a properly built enclosure getting hit with clean 400W or so should make you very happy. I don't know what else you would want.

What type of music do you listen to? How much trunk space are you willing to sacrifice? How much clean power are you sending? etc.....

These are the questions I'd need answered to be able to offer you a better opinion.

Another brand you may not have considered is Audiobahn. You can get a sh!tload of bang for the buck out of them.

Personally, I think you'd be fine with your L5 in a well made enclosure and a good amp.

Music that loud is only played for I would say a total of 5 fivutes everyday. This is what I believe you want a fast car with alot of power, but you wont be able to use that fast car with alot of power to it potential everyday or not even every week. I just like having the power there when I need it. I just cant understand driving around a 1960-70's chevy with 8 15's and still see straight after a 5 mintue drive. I am young and when showing up to a party thats when you use the musics potential(and also got this little bimmer kid who thinks he is better cause his daddy makes alot of money and his dad bought the 40k car and hte 10k system!!! yes my parents bought my car just becasue I got a full scolarship to college and I worked my azz off, this bimmer bitzotch allways gets me started)
ACurax2 I am gonna keep the single solobaric and just get a custom install. Probally before summer casue this $5.50 job aint cuttin yet. Its gonna be a sealed box and gonna make it looks like a part of the trunk wit a fiberglass front. then like i said a kid wants to buy my 6 month used solo and my vented box and my amp for $500 and then if he does I am thinking why not get a Kicker solo L7 and a 600.1.

no no no I am really happy with teh L5 I got 600 clean watts going to that thing. Its a Vented enclousure and I can hit 140+db's easily. My frined with one L7 and the same box with memphis 1000 watt wit a 149. I want some of my trunk back and still keep the slam of the L5 in a vented box and its just not possiable so I though 2 12's in a sealed box would do the trick.

Also I was quoted by someone that my car has some of the cleanest bass ever. I out did a guy with 2 comp Vr 12's. I love the way the bass sounds in my car but I am worried if its doing any damage to my car. Also how is your alpine install coming along.

I should have the bulk of it completed by tomorrow night. I haven't been able to take as many pics as I'd like since it just seems to slow me down. I'll definitely have pics of the final product once I'm done.

I can tell you from experience that 2 12's in a well built, properly braced enclosure take up a lot of space! How big is your current box?

My current box houses two IDQ 12s. Each side is roughly 1.2 cf and is internally braced based on the info I got from the JL Audio website and my own personal calculations. Subtracting the volume of the internal bracing and the sub itself yields a net internal volume of roughly 1.0 cf per side. The box is made of 3/4in. MDF and I'd guess weighs @ 85lbs. with the woofers. The box is probably stronger than my car!!! It also takes up a VERY large portion of my trunk. More so than I can tolerate now that I have a child.

I'm going to build a new box for the two 10" IDQ V.1s I just won on ebay. Each side will be 0.6cf and the overall weight shouldn't be much over 55lbs. once I'm done. I'm guessing it will take up about 40% less trunk space and will sacrifice very little in terms of sound quality. I always thought the 12s were too much since I only listen to rock/metal. If I was into rap or something else bass intensive, I might appreciate the 12s more. I know my younger brother is chomping at the bit for me to push the 12s his way once I get the 10s in my car

BTW, I could swear that from remembering the pics I saw of your trunk, the box didn't take up much space at all. Maybe I'm thinking of someone elses.

Could you post some pics just for a refresher? I remember thinking your trunk had a VERY clean install with a good bit of remaining space. OR maybe I've had too many Buds tonight

Bozz it was my car with the small box. I have two boxes one that is .90 cuft and the one thats in the trunk is a 3.02 cuft. I want to keep the slam and the space now. Just sitting on my bed and thinking about the money ill waste gettin new stuff. I mean I have all good equipment. I will keep my L5 and get a new custom wood/fiberglass box built with about 1.5 cuft internal air volume. From all this damn reading I will gain alot of the low bass notes that my .90 didnt hit. my vented dosnet hit any high notes I noticed. So a 1.5cuft sealed should do the trick. I will just keep the 3.cuft vented in my room and buy a cheapazz kicker wanna be square subs and wire it to 8 ohm and hook it up to my reciever.

It sounds like you have everything you need. Once you build a good enclosure for your L5 sub, you should be good to go. Yes, you'll get a bump from having a vented/ported enclosure, but you do lose some SQ. It's all about planning your system from scratch knowing what you want from it up front.

It doesn't sound like you're building a competition system. That means you're building a system for YOU. Decide what you want from your system and go from there. You've got the sub and the power to drive it. It sounds like all you need is the proper enclosure for it.

Since I build them myself, it's tough to tell you what to do. Don't get carrried away with the whole fiberglass macho bullsh!t. Just get a well built sealed enclosure for your L5 and pound the sh!t out of it with your 500W amp.

You'll thank me in the long run

ok so lets say I do a box wiht a depth of 15in height of 13 and width of 21 inchs should give me about 1.55cuft with the woofer in the box. A box like that would cost me about 80 bucks I think.

Go here: http://www.eatel.net/~amptech/elecdisc/caraudio.htm

Do a search for box calcs. You should consider building the box yourself. I learned long ago that NOBODY takes better care of your interests than YOU!!

Either way, keep us informed.

Thanx for that site bozzz. I was just spending sometime lookin at it. Its very informative. I would love to install my whole audio system and even make my box, but that thing I dont have is time. I have 17 credit hours of college this semester, put 15 hours to studing each week, work a 25 hour job, and help my parents out at there businesses. Now at 19 I value time more than ever. Since it was my spring break this past week I got to sleep in 3 of the days, and that hasnt happpened in awhile for me. Not this week but next I am gonna get everything installed in my car. I do wanna do it this week but the audio place is booked up due to spring break nationals.

You guys should be using WinISD pro for your calcs or to double check. I think there's over 1000 drivers in the library. Get a free download here:
