amps...
I've got a 500/1 right now, and I'm looking to upgrade to more powerful subs, which would require more power from the amp.
Would it be better to pick up another JL Audio 500/1 and connect the two together, or sell mine and get a 1000/1?
Or is it OK to hook up my current 500/1 to an amp of a different brand?

what type of sub do you plan on getting... that 500/1 can easily push 2 mid grade 12's... lets say 2 12w3v2... but if you are planning on getting say 2 idmax's or something then i would say yes sell the amp you have and get a new one..
2 12w6v2s would be very nice but i would have to say you will either need another 500/1 or get rid of the 500/1 and get the 1000/1... or maybe look at the w3v2 and push them with the 500/1... going from the 2 10 kenwoods to the 2 12 w6v2 is going to be a big difference... i mean big difference...

I just don't have the money to upgrade the subs and the amp at the same time. And yeah, I do realize that I will need a bigger amp.
JL Audio spec charts says that optimum range for one 12W6v2 is 350-400 watts. Minimum range is around 200 watts. With the 500/1, I can provide 250 watts per sub, and I think it'll do for now until I get more money and buy a bigger amp. What do you think??
How are the W3v2's, anyway? Do they hit really hard??

I think you would be well ahead to buy the subs first. You may like the way they sound with the 250 per and may not need another or different amp. It would take doubling the 500 watts for you to really notice the difference so, it would take another 500/1 or switching to a 1000/1 to get that difference.
2 12w3v's will hit plenty hard... i think that 2 12w6v2s will be over kill... but you could always start with one and then upgrade to 2... my boy has 2 12w3v2s and a 600w amp and his **** hits hard as hell... to much for me.. my one 12w6v2 and my jl 500/1 hits good enough to rattle my whole car...

i agree whit shawhite...2 12w6v2's is overkill, i'm actually gonna go with one also, either that or 2 w3v2's by the way..which do you think sounds better shawhite, you have heard both of them? what do you suggest?

You guys might not be familiar with Kenwood Tornadoes, but that's what I have right now -- 2 10"s on the 500/1. They hit pretty hard, shaking all the mirrors in my car, but the only thing I don't like is that you can't really hear the bass outside the car. Just rattles coming from the trunk. :o
Would upgrading to two 12W3v2's solve that problem, or do I need to go with two 12W6v2's?

w3v2's would solve your problem, 2 of them would be able to be pushed by the 500/1 amp, if you went with 2 w6v2's you would have to buy another 500/1 for the other one
my trunk used to rattle like crazy, so i decided to dynamat my whole car, literally, my entire car has been dynamatted and the difference is phenominal, i highly recommend you dynamat at lease your trunk and around your 6.5's in the door, trust me you'll like the difference

Can you hear two 12W3v2's outside the car in close vicinity? I'm not looking for a system to loud that I want to annoy people in traffic. But something with a little more kick than my 2 10"s. My main complaint with them is that you can't hear anything outside the car, just rattles.
Also, is it hard to build a box?

mdf is the new material that is used to make sub boxes, particle board breaks when you drill it and it as not a dense as mdf, and yes, if you has 2 w3v2's with a 500/1 jl amp pushing them, you would hear it from a good distance away, my friend has 1 w3vs with a 900 fosgate amp pushing at and it pounds, i can hear this kid all the way up my street
unless you looking to do a custom fit box for your TL, just buy one, it would be wayyy easier, but if you insist on making the box go to a website like aj.com or webcrawler.com and do a search for how to make a subwoofer box, sometimes you find a kid who posted pics of a custom job
dont buy a prefab box.. got to home depot and get a sheet of 3/4 mdf... and go to town... building a box is very easy... and personally i would go with ported but that is just me.. oh and for whoever asked me about which one is better between the w3v2s and the w6v2s... i would say that the w6v2s hit a little harder and are definately cleaner sounding... but if you are on a budget the w3v2s are good bang for the buck...
i guess it depends on how much bass you want.. i would compair my 1 12w6v2 to 2 decent 10subs.. maybe 2 10w0's... but much much cleaner... originally i had one 12w7 and it was just to much... stepped down to the 12w6v2 and its perfect for me..

to my opinion i think he only needed one, but yeah when he had two of them you can hear him like 3 to 4 blocks away. thats with his bass gain down to -6 we didnt want to push it to 0 or +6-8 because all we heard was bass and he didnt want his trunk to blow up
