alpine navigation
I am contemplating the purchase of an aftermarket navigation system. Before I take away the 400 I have saved up for sways to help fund the navi, I would like to know how much an Alpine dvd navi costs (and install). Also, do I need to buy a navigation system, and then a monitor too? Last question, do these come ready to play dvd movies, or do I have to buy extra crap?

i think the one that can play DVD's costs like $2000...and i don't know how much for sure...

The alpine navi alone will run u about 2k, and that includes nothing but the actual dvd navigation reader and the navigation computer/antenna.. you need to get the monitor if you want to see nething but u dont have to spend too much on that if you dont want to, u can get a cheaper model monitor and it doesnt have to be alpine... although i opted for that because i've never had problems with any of the alpine stuff that i had... high quality and reliable... as far as playing dvd's, you once again need to shell out 600-1k for a separate dvd player, again it could be any brand as long as you have video out on it and video in on the monitor... the alpine navi dvd will NOT play regular dvd's, only the navi one but i gotta tell you its one of the best investments i've ever made... it drives me to malls and all over other states... its great... and it keeps the passengers from talking cuz they can watch a movie while in the car

hmm...the fine people at sound advice told me that it would work with no other monitors but the alpines. i got the tme-m750a, vcr, dreamcast, and a fm modulator so the sound comes out of the car speakers. if you want to be able to play dvd movies the best plan is to just get a playstation 2 and mount it in your car because the ps2 plays dvd's. that is what i am going to do as soon as i can get my hands on one.......bye bye dreamcast.

That's exactly the setup I want, snook. Too bad it'd be a looooong drive to get to NJ from Texas . This is ALOT of money however, and I'm not sure if I can come up with this much in one summer. Anyways, thanks all for your help, and to streets for his email.

Pioneer TV Tuner
Jenson KVC 1500 HI-FI Mobile Video System (VCR)
Pioneer CHM-S620 6 Disk Changer
Alpine DVD Navigation System
and had my 2 Sentec Monitors Street Effects did, wired up.
Total parts and labor around 4,000

Well, here's a thought that I had that I was just wondering if it is possible. I'm not an expert but I think streeteffectz or stevetms might know more about this and can elaborate on it.
Why not put a laptop monitor in the dash somwhere, a really small LCD. Have it powered by a laptop with DVD, and you can also hook a GPS receiver to the laptop, install a TV card, and it would also be able to play MP3s, imagine how much it can hold. Oh and don't forget to install a playstation emulator And also get yourself some wireless internet while you're at it
Now you got your MP3, GPS, Game Machine, TV, Surf the Web, all from your car I think this would be way cheaper to get than if you were to get the other units seperately.

Snook,
I'm looking at getting video on my factory nav using the decoder from Steve (in the Audio/electronics forum). Question: How is the TV reception in your car? A couple of shops have told me that TV reception is, and always will be, poor in cars when moving. A tuner cost about $150. Are you happy with the performance?
