Unhappy Accidents are motivators?

Hey, i havent posted here for awhile, but just last friday I got rear ended by a BMW X5. My 03 TLS' rear end was destroyed.

But no worries the guy got charged with careless driving and got six demerits and is a world of trouble, and the insurance is taking care of the car, so all is good.

Except for my 2 Alpine TypeR 12" Subs and my RF 2400watt amp. The box got crushed but surprisingly eveything is ok, the subs and the amp, which was mounted on the rear of the box.

Right now i have those subs and the amp running off of my stock HU, and stock bose crappy paper speakers. I know, its terrible. So, what i was thinking was a Pioneer headunit with a pair of 6 1/2" Alpine typeR's up front and a pair of 6 1/2" Alpine typeS's in the back, and to just dump out the already dead stock 9" blose sub.

I have found the metra kit on ebay, for around 20USD. Have any of you had the kit installed and, if so, how does it look?

Thanks for listenin to my story, any input is appreciated

Sorry, I don't really have much input on the gear; other than buy speakers you've heard in person and liked at all volumes.

But, I'm sorry to hear about the car. My 01 TL got rear-ended with serious impact (55mph vs. stopped) a few months ago. You can't believe the works these bodyshops can do--I cannot tell my car was ever damaged. And I have a pretty critical eye.

PS - I did install the metra kit. Sanded it down and painted the face black as per posts that are out there if you look for them. The kit fit my 01 TL perfectly. Only problem with sanding is the face is very susceptible to light scratches/scuffs.

Hope you're okay!

Thanks for the info, yea I took it to a body shop i trust, and i know that in a week or so, i will see her for all of her beauty again. I absolutely love this car to death, i would have rather taken some serious whiplash than to see my car the was she was.

I love the Alpine's i have now, but it will be kinda hard to find them in a retail store that sells them in order for me to test them out. But i trust the quality of alpines products, especially their subs, and maybe their speakers.

I will probly just start out with getting the new 6 1/2"s up fron t and then changing out the stock HU. I was thinking of buying a Panasonic "ghost" face HU, CQ-HX1083U, its a little hard to find info on this but i was able to grab the manual from their website. It is being sold by a police auction and doesnt include the remote, have any of you, ever called in to a company for a replacement remote for a in dash unit?

Thanks in advance
Jeremy

Personally I'm not the biggest fan of panasonic heads, but they do have a fairly good reputation. As far as getting a remote you can try calling the company or you can go to a a local shop that sells panasonic and get them to order one. Cost ought to be about the same. I know atleast with pioneer i've had to replace my remote a few times and it's actually been cheaper to get it through my shop then to go to pioneer directly.

i agree i dont like pioneer headunits. the only thing i like is how you can control practically everything with them. i dunno just never liked them tho. my recommendation is to get a nice Alpine headunit. i have the 9833 and i love it. It is such a badass unit plus it looks classy, i mean it is an Alpine. They put those things in Ferrari's all day. Oh and if you get the type R components, correct me if im wrong, but those have to be ran of an amp. The others dont. Hope i could help.

Yea they have 6 1/2" components and 6 1/2" coaxials, so I will probably go with the coaxial, but what i was thinking was to buy a new head unit and a 4 channel amp for the door speakers, i saw 2 kenwood 70x4 4/3/2 channel amps on ebay police auctions too, im not sure how much it might end up being but its only 100$ right now, but when i buy the HU, i will probably feel kinda sad about not using the power from it, such as if i connected the speakers up to a separate amp.

So, are their any headunits made by someone, that dont include an amp, like just the cd/mp3/wma... and a lcd with buttons and no amp.

Do any companies make that, i havent seen it before, but i would just feel like i had wasted a bit of $ on the HU, cuz i wouldnt even end up using the amp it provides.

Thanks for all the replys
