about to do my fiberglass enclosures... what would sound better?

my choices so far are my 2 12's set up like the tsx. in the back of the trunk on either side facing eachother. or make the enclosure so that the subs are angled facing foward in the back corner. so the right side sub would be facing the left side door roughtly a 45 degree angle or so, and the opposite for the other sub just looking for ideas from the guys that do it for a living. i originally had them in a box facing back but thats not an option now.

I think having them fire directly towards each other would sound better than turning them 45deg. Here is a link to most of my fiberglass construction pics. I will bw doing a write up once I get my computer fixed.....damn lightning bolt still got a brutha down.

Hope it helps.

Demolition...gonna answer you here to share info.

I used mat cut in smaller square pieces for the rears of the first set of boxes. Now I have all the patterns for both sides so I use patterns that eliminate small pieces. Then I used mesh on top of a t-shirt type material for the front. Then added mat to the inside of the front for sturdiness. ONce the front was on and the speaker hole was cut through material I poured resin inside the box and sloshed it around the wood speaker mount to ensure the wood and the front material are bonded well.

Suggestions-
-Buy a box of disposable gloves and change them frequently. Fiberglass sticks to everything...your dog, your clothes, the dining table, your toothbrush.....It will get there somehow!($5)
-Buy a bag of disposable paint brushes($5)
-2 gallons of Resin($32ea)
-2extra hardner packs($4)
-6 packs of mat=1yard ea($6ea)
-3 packs of mesh (6ea)
-You should be able to get away with a 2'x4' particle board

Home depot has every single thing you need to do it. except for the charcoal felt to finish the box.

And if I remeber anything else (which I should) I will post tomorrow

thanks bud. i got the resin. the diy from a few weeks ago the guy used chopped. i was wondering how you got the mat smooth with out wrinkles and i guess cutting it into smaller squares would help that out alot. thanks for the help. this is going to be my thanksgiving break project. i miss my bass.

I wouldn't cut the mat, I'd rip it (with gloves on). I find rough edges overlap and mesh better with other pieces. Square cuts, either leave a gap where they meet, or form a bump when they overlap - at least the way I was doing it, I hold the rank of novice.

damn you are paying out the A$$ for resin.. find a local boating supply company you should be able to save some money ... West marine is still expensive but should save you some over Home depot or lowes.. I get mine from a local supply company for about 13.50 Gallon

When I was looking, West Marine wasn't any cheaper - mat was actually more expensive (same weight).

I couldn't find resin any cheaper around here either. I even called a few boat builders and repair shops, but the price break per gallon wasn't worth the travel or effort.

The mat you can definately find cheaper especially if you buy it by the roll.

as far as cutting the mat and ripping it goes......I still suggest cutting it and getting it all ready to go before you even mix the resin. If you rip the mat you will have little fiber hairs everywhere. And just 1 tiny drop of resin and a tiny hair of fiberglass in the wrong spot can be a complete nightmare. Any bumps from piecing the squares together will be filled by resin, so cut it.

Wow.. well i guess also because of the large marine industry in South Florida that might be helping me out.. I complained when resin went over 55 for a five gallon bucket.. I have not been into a west marine in years but thought they would at least be cheaper then the Big box resellers but I guess not.. By the way optomos your install looks great very clean leaves alot of functional room.. Hell almost have me rethinking the install I am about to start for my car..

Also I do agree with Cjams about cutting before hand... I usally cut in various sizes starting with larger strips 2 X 10 then 2 x 6 and work my way down to about 2 x 2 squares it just makes it much easier to apply once you mix your resin.. Otherwise if try to rip the mat while trying to apply it I end up with gloves covered in matt strands.. Also one tool that is overlooked but can be helpfull is a glass roller great to get out any air bubbles that can weaken your mold. Also before you break out the glass GET SOME ACETONE its the only solvent that will remove resin while its wett use it to clean your tools and of course yourself.. no matter how hard you try you WILL get some on yourself..

It's just a matter of preference, but I prefer rip to cut. Of course, I rip the pieces beforehand, not while I go...

Don't know, but I'd be willing to bet whatever difference there might possibly be, it would be difficult to tell since they're in the trunk. If you had two subs in a room in a house say, their position with respect to the room and each other would make a difference to someone in that room, but it would likely be hard to tell in the next room. It's not like one is wired in reverse polarity. Then again, it could be the single most important factor in a multiple subwoofer system...why don't you build it out three separate ways and get back to us?

Unfortunately I don’t think anyone will be able to give you a written in stone answer... For my I have always taken the time to build a couple of quick mdf boxes and test out how it sounds with different placement it really is going to boil down to the cars acoustics so unless someone has tried both setups in the same car as you Its really just going to be an educated guess or just an I heard "place your car audio myth here" from another forum

While the glass cloth is nice and can be very strong I usally find chop matt better for biulding up to a good thickness.. Most of time I will use some cloth matts for biulding up on larger areas but for the contours nothing works better then plain old chop...CHOP MAT I cant remember what weight I usally use I will be in my shop tomarrow and take a look. Hopefully someone else with give there opinion on this ..

I use mainly Polyester resin. Epoxy resin while stronger I have found does not absorb as well into matt or cloth its mainly used for carbon fiber and kevlar.

I dont know if you plan on carpeting your box or painting it if you do plan to paint I would use rage gold as your body filler in place of Bondo.. the only use for bondo for me is to make what is known as a "milkshake" mixing about 50/50 mix of bondo and Resin then adding hardener you can apply it with a paint brush and it sands easy and lays out nice and smooth. You can use either the Bonda cream hardener or the hardener for the fiberglass. They are both really just MEKP the bondo hardener is just mixed with talcum powder and a red dye... For that matter bondo is mainly just poly resin mixed with talcum powder.

The isn't a Home Depot in Toms River? How about a Lowes? They have the same shit - mat, cloth, resin. It's in the paint and misc. poisons section.

FYI.....Homey Depot has all the fiberglass stuff in one spot. You may be able to find better deals elsewhere, but if you wake up Sunday mornng and decide you want to start, Homey D has it wll for ya!

As far as the direction of the subs goes...
In my lil Tsex I have tried a few systems in the past few months and the best sound came from the speakers (or ports...see pic) aiming side ways! I tried firing them forwards, backwards, and sideways. Sideways produced the best sound. Although I never angled them 45deg though.
Here's the first box I used and it sound better with the ports firing sideways from drivers side towards passenger.
