What's the big deal with aftermarket audio?

So my passenger side speaker blew, a cracked formed making a bad poping sound, and so did my sub, the cone completely separated. I saw a lot of thread on here and other forums how much better a good aftermarket speaker is compared to the stock one.

First, i bought a 2 pairs of JVC DRVN. I actually bought the front door speakers and the back on each side of the sub. I installed the front 2 and wow, they sounded like shit. My blown speaker still sounded miles better. I then went back and bought the Infinity Primus. Installed those, they sounded a lot better, but still nothing close to stock...they all lacked bass and the mid and highs sounded like if it came from a cheap speaker. So i brought those back and got the Kicker KS. I'm not close to 250$ for a pair, and they do sound much better, much more bass, but still, i prefered the stock sound.

I know, i know, i have stock amp, but those small cheap speakers were doing a fine job. Even without my sub, the rest of my stock speakers had more than enough punch to them that it sounded like if i had a sub. I have to say, those stock speakers are excellent. And i decided to leave the Kickers in and wait for my sub to arrive, i was able to tweak the sound a lot with the equalizer, but if I would have known, and not drilled and cut and messed up the stock housing and wires, i would have bought my speaker at the dealer.

Your answer most likely lies within impedance, 2 ohms vs 4 ohms. The stock speakers are 2 ohms, most aftermarket speakers will be 4 ohms*. Therefore if you switch your 2 ohms speakers by 4 ohms speakers the sound level will drop considerably. Think of it as underpowering your speakers.

And then comes 1/2/3/4 way speakers.

Audio is a big world. Throwing money around isn't going to help you if you're not properly informed.

also, you're throwing money at very cheap aftermarket speakers....

ones that are noted for its tweeters.

you are underpowering your aftermarket speakers. putting just aftermarket speakers on a stock amp will do more harm than good to your ears. to get better than stock you need to either hook up an aftermarket amp to aftermarket speakers, or put more power to the stock speakers.

i'm not a huge audio guy, but i spent about 2-3 weeks researching before i did my audio system upgrade. it's a complicated thing to do (and our system is very picky) and if not done right it will sound bad. also, did you put in a coaxial speaker and leave the oem tweeters? the best route is to put in component speakers for the front.

i put an $80 JBL component set (MSRP 200, now selling for $70 on amazon) matched up with an appropriate amp and my music sounds 10x better than it did stock, no comparison. in my research i never once came across any of the speakers you said you tried..so it doesn't surprise me that they didn't sound good.

i might be out of the game but when i think of kicker i think of overpriced best buy speakers. there's many better options out there. i went with JBL components but if I could do it over I would have spent 100 more and gotten JL or Image Dynamics speakers. but for me, JBL was the best match because it was pretty much plug and play whereas the others require spacers, etc. you can spend less than $200 and get a quality system

also you shouldn't have needed to cut up the stock speaker wiring. they sell a plug and play connector kit that plugs from an aftermarket directly into your speaker input connector.

I would not call it a considerable loss in volume but a slight one. And like I said the fact that I can max out the Kickers without distortion puts them on par with the volume I get with stock before distortion starts. Anyways, i will consider changing my entire system but I'm not in a hurry.

If you dont know what Infinity speaker, or kickers are, might as well cut your veins now.

sorry Pat, Infinity and Kicker are all extremely poor choices for this system. Please do some actual research instead of spouting off about your poor choices.

Dude keeps going to bestbuy to get all of his gear. Bestbuy is where 16-18 year olds go, because they can't afford better shit. I dunno how it is down south, but up here, bestbuy carries entry level equipment. No wonder what he bought sucks balls.

I can't wait to see his "my bestbuy car starter is a piece of shit!!" Thread... And it'll likely come down to his lack of knowing how to use a soldering iron properly.

Pat,

LOL, "I think $1000 sounds better in your bank account".

You're confusing quantity over quality. By going aftermarket you can get better speakers and amplifiers but they're not tuned to the interior of the car.

It's hard to beat a well engineered factory stereo system bc it's made for that vehicle's interior. Also the components are matched to each other to produce good to excellent sound.

With a good recording the factory systems do sound excellent.

Again don't confuse quantity over quality.

Now Pat, please pass the Grey Poupon.

Finally one person that truly understands audio. I said the exact same thing as you right before everybody started bashing. For some reason, those same dickweeds don't address the multiple times i've seen you say this to other members.
