Replacing Dome/Map Lights with LED's..here we go!
Hi all....
So we will see how this goes, but I am going to try to replace the passenger dome and driver/map lights on a 2012 Tl with blue LED's. I know these are already LED's and I am starting with the rear seat dome lights:
Here is what they look like:
and here is another
I have measures the LED voltage, and it reads 2.87V at the feedpoint...the package of the LED's seems to also be a plcc2, as it measures 3.3 x 3.2 mm and about 1.8mm tall...as best I can measure it with a digital caliper...
So I am going to try and hunt of these LED's down, find a blue one, and then maybe work some magic with my soldering iron to replace the ones already on there....we shall see how it goes....I never thought that you need so much circuitry behind driving these simple LEDs..I mean look at that circuit board!! Geesh!!
Has anyone does this? What do you guys think?

...adding to the information here, as some folks asked over a private message....
Here is how you remove the rear passenger dome lights...
Any other questions, please ask.....more info to come, as I get these LEDs in, and get to do some tests on my bench....
Again, looking for anyone else here that might have done this, or have any suggestions....

OK...So we have SUCCESS on the rear Dome lights!!
Here is what the old and the new LED's look like!
Very bright, and I am doing the front map lights next...basically all I did is replaced the LED's that were there with new ones. Here are the LED part number I used:
720-LBG6SPV2BB351Z...go to mouser.com, enter this part number, and those are the ones you need...they are about .90 cents each!
Now, with that said, you will need to have some experience working with SMT components, and have a very fine tip soldering Iron, or a hot-air reflow station....I have a hot air station I got from Amazon a long time ago...(like this one: )
More to come as I do the front map lights, and pics, and also I will try to get some pics of what the lights look like when it gets dark out....
So far, so good on the mod! Again, this is for a 2012 TL AWD

OK...and the front map lights are now done as well!
I have to say, they look awesome....I will take some shots when dark out so you guys can see what this does to the interior....a bit of a complex mod, but in the end, it costs about 7 bucks and some work!
Front map lights detail...these are the spots from the front console that will need to have the LEDs replaced...
First, here is how you remove the front map lights console...
Then we replace the LEDs (as detailed in the previous post) in the same manner...here are pics of the console taken apart, and the SMT LEDs that will need to be replaced...
Please let me know if I can answer any Questions....Mod worked out quite well, and I am really likeee the blue interior!
Cheers!

@potmilkz: Really not that much...the dome lights come off quite easily, and the soldering took about an hour in total with the right tools.....No pain NO Gain.... :-)
@Megatron: Check the images out below....took them with my iphone, so not the best....I will also try to take a shot from far away, so you can see how bright they are....for some reason, Blue Light is VERY hard to photograph!

I think it would be too dark as well. About the only time I ever turn on my interior lights is to read something and the blue would be tough, at least to me.

I want to do this as well but want 6k white rather than blue. Any clue on a part# for that? Also I'd like to make the blue ones brighter, ones that light up the cup holder area.
I did do the foot well lighting mod b4 I even read about it oon azine. Love that one.
I may also add the blue led lighting in the interior door handle trim like the 2014 mdx has...

That's very close in terms of the current and voltage but has a smaller viewing angle (60 vs 120)
This one is a green version of it but is incredibly bright
I'm still digging into it.
