I think if members were given the ability to "edit" forever, they'd probably abuse it a bit during some disagreements, to try to make themselves look like a bigger man by editing their post after a response to it has been made.
The only productive aspect of having an "edit" forever feature would be for updating OPs in build threads and such. Moderators seem happy to do that for the thread starter, so it's a moot point.

The reason is because you can't just trust anyone with those abilities.
So some of us that can control it, should be thankful to those who abused it and because of them, it was taken away from everyone.
