You or having it rebuilt? Are you sure the tension on th e belt is correct? Mine was ruined by dealer when changing the pulley an dbelt. New tension was too much.

How many miles you put on that power steering pump already?

40some k. i changed the belts and put the tension back to where it was and apparently it was too much cause it happened almost instantly.

Ill try replacing the bearings and seals myself. I hope it lasts 1k miles. cause i have a bit of driving to do this weekend and this car does not want to turn without PS

Curious - what was the milage when your original pump went out? What are symptoms? Noise or more effort to turn?

ahh was gonna say how the hell that happened, but remembered looking at the service manual and it says to becareful not to over tighten, puttin stress on the bearing...

hockey, i believe it would be a constant whinning sound at all times, as long as the belt is still in tact

That technique only works when you put the same belt back on. The Helm book says when you put a new belt on you set it to the tight spec(in book) run for 5min and then set it to the used belt spec(also in book or what it was before in your case. You would need a belt tension check tool to use those two specs. I just finished my timing belt and will need to tighten my power steering belt again. I hope I dont break this pump. I have it marked where it should be and since its the same belt should be close enough.

first one was over 200k, made went out shortly after the 6 speed swap (probably due to me messing with the way teh PS works(i was changing the effort of the assist) Symptoms are noise from the pump

No i do have a gage to measure tension. I do per the manual. It was done right. Tighten run for 5 min then readjust. this is the 3rd time now. Funny thing is after a drive to IL it has stopped making nose and seems to be running fine ??

Kris if I hear my pump churning, would adding fluid be a solution or is it time to replace?

Check the fluid level. If its low add fluid. If not its probably the pump

My car is making a weird noise during turning as well (after doing the 6 speed swap). We topped off the fluid and it looks OK. Could there be some air in the lines or is it out?

Here's a video where you can hear the sound it is making. Skip to last 20 seconds or so.

I turned my speakers wayyyyy up, and I'm pretty sure it's your PS pump.

Hey fsttyms, which seals and gaskets are needed (I'd rather not guess), and are there any special tools required to do the rebuild? This seems like a much better solution than replacing and mine is whining like a mofo.

Thanks, Jeff
