Fitment issues to be aware of

I’ve finally resolved a 4 month ongoing issue with winter wheels for my type S that i thought i’d share in case any one else has similar issues in the future. Back in October i ordered a set of Fast FC04 in 19x8.5 et45 (FC04A-1985- 12TN+45C726) because i wanted to go down a size to 19’s for winter and these were extremely light weight at 21lbs. Both the company i bought them from and the manufacturers website indicated they fit my type s. For the first couple days i loved them, the car felt so much lighter on its feet and eager from the lighter wheels. Then strange noises and vibrations started. I checked the torque and they had all backed WAAAYYY off. This was after maybe 70km and i had to give 2 full cranks to most lugs to get them to spec. At first i blamed the shop that installed them for not torqueing them properly but noises returned after another 50km and they had to backed off again. At this point i took the wheels off and found that none of the lug nuts were seating properly, they seemed wider then the opening for the nut in the wheel so only a very small portion of the lug nuts were making contact (this is a conical drilled wheel and conical m14x1.5 spline lug nuts were used)

at first i thought this was defect from the company and the used the wrong cast to drill 5x120 as the lug holes were pushed as far out in the cavity as they could go before making contact with the outer portion of the spokes.

I contacted the company i bought the wheels from and they contacted the Fast Co who agreed this appeared incorrect and they would send replacements. I gave the company the casting numbers on the wheel and told them do not send the same cast again with 5x120 drilled in it or it will be the same result. What arrived in the mail? The exact same cast drilled the exact same way.

At this point i was done with Fast co. And not giving them or any of their subcompanies another chance to send a wheel that fits and we were getting snow up here in the great white north so i wanted something else ASAP. I decided on Euro Design Legend 5x120 19x8.5 et 40 (LEG1985J4064MG)They were the correct hub diameter and used radius bolts as acura uses OEM and at et 40 would have no problem clearing the type S brakes so i thought they were the safest bet. What could go wrong? Apparently quite a bit. The first thing i noticed was that a 22mm socket would not fit in the lug holes (purple socket is 22mm, black/red is 19mm), so i wouldnt be able to use the stock lug nuts. After some digging i found that porsche used similar R14 lug nuts as honda but with a 19mm socket (9918200336) so i ordered a set of aftermarket ones. Once they arrived i test fit them on the car and again the lug nut did not seat right. Only making a small contact patch just like with the previous wheels!

So at this point im beyond pissed and contacted eurodesign directly who were incredibly helpful. Apparently there are 2 5x120 et40 versions of the wheels the LEG1985J4064MG that was ordered for me and a L1985J4064MG version which they knew a 22mm socket would fit in. They had their own delivery truck drop off the new set a day later (i was very impressed with how Eurodesign handled everything, very eager to assist) which could now accept a 22mm thin wall socket and i noticed a large difference in the nut seat on the wheel. Turns out that the LEG version had been drilled for R12, and the L version had been drilled for R14. When the TLX changed to the 2nd gen for 2021 it changed to an R14 radius lug nut (to go along with the M14x1.5, 5x120 lug size) from R12 (M12x1.5, 5X114.3). Which is why nothing was fitting, the lug seats were all drilled for R12. I never even knew there were even different radius sizes but apparently in the mercedes/vw/porsche world this is a thing. (Left lug is R14 lug on R14 wheel, not torqued down so there would actually be even more contact, right is r14 lug nut on R12 wheel)

the L1985J4064MG version of the wheels are now on the car and they fit perfectly.

The lesson to be learned here is that even the manufacturers might not know what nut seat the wheels are drilled to. Both of the makers of these wheels thought that the wheels should fit looking at them from an offset, size and bolt pattern perspective but the lug seat fitment is something i have never considered before.
DON’T ASSUME THAT BECAUSE A WHEEL IS 5x120 AND CORRECT DIMENSIONS AND ET THAT IT WILL FIT. CONFIRM WHAT THE NUT SEAT DIMENSION OF THE WHEEL IS, MOST WHEEL MANUFACTUERER’S DO NOT LIST THIS ON THEIR WEBSITES. Im suspisious this may be why you are still not given any results when searching wheels for the type S on tirerack.

-I can say for sure that wheels that are drilled to radius R12 or R14 are different and need to be specific to the size your car needs, but the wheels themselves will fit over a m12 or m14 lug no matter which they are drilled for, so just putting the wheel on the lugs is not going to tell you whether its drilled to r12 or r14.

- i can’t100% confirm that the fast FC04 FC04A-1985- 12TN+45C726 is drilled to only accomodate a conical m12 lug nut. In fact i cant find anything on-line that says an m14 or m12 conical nut will have a different outer diameter, they would have a 60 degree cone either way but i did not measure the exterior dimension of the nut to know for sure, but the m14 conical nut not seeming to fit in the hole drilled in the wheel would seem to indicate that the external diameter of the m14 would be wider, or it is a defect with this specific wheel.

-no, if you have get an R12 wheel you cannot just use an R12 lug nut on it on this car. The internal diameter of an R14 lug nut is only meant to fit an M14 lug and an R12 lug nut will only fit and M12 lug.

- the porsche 9918200336 are a fun option to change things up and have black lug nuts. I also prefer having a 19mm socket then a 22.

- Fast Co FC04A-1985- 12TN+45C726 DO NOT FIT
- Eurodesign Legend LEG1985J4064MG DO NOT FIT
-Eurodesign Legend L1985J4064MG FIT!!!!!

Your wheel fitment experience is extremely useful and informative. I'm sure all 2G TLX owners will benefit from it.

Just wish there are more posts in this 2G TLX forum as of such high caliber and usefulness, rather than about pissing talk on Acura vs Audi/BMW.
