TLX Type S BRAKE ISSUES: rattle

So this was previously under STRUT issues....but has since been diagnosed...and NOT fixed

The Issue with the Type S rattle over bumps on the front end is BRAKE Related. To be exact it's the Pads on the Brembo brakes. They rattle. The regular TLX has glued in pads, these do not. They 'float' on pins, and subsequently they rattle. There are 2 spring clips that hold them in place, but they are in the wrong position to work properly. By design.

So anyone having this issue? It's up in the air how to fix it. I've tried a few things and will do some more, but our service dept did report back to Acura Engineering on this.

I "Fixed" the issue by applying brake over bumps...all gone. Just a matter of how to stop it now! LOL. Stay tuned

I just got my car back from the dealer yesterday. They also determined it was the pads rattling on the caliper pins. There is excessive play between pads and pins. Noise can be reproduced by wiggling pad on pin as they are held on by the springs. They used aluminum tape on pins to help insulate the pads from pins. It took away most of the rattle on most bumps. Obviously not a permanent solution. However I still have rattle over cracks in asphalt and it is just as loud as before. Don't know what the solution is. My hope is Acura doesn't just write this off as a "characteristic" of the car.

Fixed

Ok....so it's fixed. I spent about an hour this morning with the tire off, and my stainless tubes ready to pull the calipers. But did a ONCE over, again, and realized what the issue was...or at least what I hoped it was:

The pads are NOT rattling on the carrier bolts....the BACK pad was slapping against the caliper, or something at the rear of the brake. Sooooo....

I got some 5.6mm nuts, drilled them out so they would slide on the carrier bolt, removed the bolt, pulled the pad toward the rotor, slid the nut in place and put the pin in.....4 times, for 4 bolts

AND? For the first time in 4 mos NO RATTLE!

Now it's not a permanent fix, but I'm getting with Acura to tell them how to fix the issue the right wayl

Did you place the nuts between the pad and caliper? On the pins ? Trying to picture how it is? Any pics by chance? Thanks.

Yes I did. But… this is mostly just to figure out what the exact problem was. The spacers are a bit too big… And it’s not the right approach. I have a fix on the way, I’m putting a closed Cell high temperature, silicone pad behind the brake pad so it doesn’t hit the caliper. That’s the issue. The brake pads are tapping against the caliper on the inside of the rotor. I thought it was up and down movement but it’s forward and backwards movement.

so this fix, even though it worked, isn’t ideal, ultimately. Just because the pad is pressing against the rotor, which is fine, but it made some noise this morning in the damp weather for a bit. And there’s a little vibration, because the spacers are slightly different sizes.

The high temperature foam/silicone will be here tomorrow, so I’m going to take it apart, apply to the rear of the pad and hope for the best.

Update

So anyone with this issue needs to reach out to Acura....I did reach out to engineering and did get a reply back, although it was on the WRONG car, MDX non type S damper issue?! LOL...anyway....

I did pull the spacers out, for now. To stiff and caused some squeeky noise on initial driving as they were pressed against the rotor to firmly. No biggie, but just waiting on my brake pad shims. I ordered a few things to try out, one being some high temp sticky silicone matting, 1/8" thick, to apply to the back. That will give is some cushion and 'give' and won't keep the pad on the rotor. Hopefully. I also picked up some 5mm (demo shims I made were about 5.6mm) RUBBER washers to try as well.

Keep you posted!
