My new 2021 TLX A-Spec

Hello all. I am new to the community as I’ve heard of it but never joined. I’m a Acura guy! My first Acura was the Integra back in 1999. I work relentlessly that summer to come up with a down payment for it. Fast forward to today and I could not resist and wait any longer and got the new 2021 TLX A-Spec. It’s all stocked but working on a few things in the comping days. Loading…

1st Acura 99 Integra
2nd Acura 02 RSX
3rd Acura 06 TSX (got a family)
4th Acura 09 TSX (got totaled)
5th Acura 12 TSX Tech
6th Acura 21 TLX A-Spec (kids older and I’m single lol)

I agree I was originally looking at white but the more I saw the Lunar Silver the more it grew on me. Plus I don’t see it as much on the road.

Welcome aboard - I love the contrast of the A-SPEC trim - especially from behind! She's quite a bit different from that 99 Integra for sure.

Personally I would have gone with SH-AWD so you can really hammer it while going around all those *ucking roundabouts in the DC area

Congrats on the new TLX!

I traded my 2019 ASPEC SH-AWD for a 2021 Type S in Apex Blue recently. I loved my ASPEC and I'm sure you'll love this one too as it's much improved from the first generation TLX.

I'm a bit envious right now. My Type S was rear ended 9 days into ownership so I'm driving a rental Nissan Kicks with it's 120hp! Hopefully I get it back soon.

I want an Acura again. Any Acura...

Enjoy the TLX buddy.

We usually stay at the Doubletree (now Tapestry) in Bethesda when we’re in the DC area. I have had the honor of stopping in to that store a couple of times. Nice operation.

I desperately wanted a first gen Integra when I was in the Air Force, but wasn’t in the budget.

1998 CL, a classy comfortable car
2000 TL, roomier, smoother
2007 TL, my all time favorite car I’ve owned, replaced an RX8 (love/hate)
2012 TSX, my least favorite Acura
2021 TLX (FWD Advance), may become my all-time favorite

+1 Few months ago ordered a positive battery harness cable for my TL from Chevy Chase on Amazon. Much better price than any other Acura OEM part websites.

If you have some time when in the DC area, recommend going to Katie's Coffee and Cars in Potomac on early Saturday mornings

I have to ask...why not get the AWD variant? The TLX FWD is a glorified Accord, and the ASPEC has less features than the $10K cheaper Accord Touring with the same exact 2.0T 10AT. Personally, I firmly believe FWD TLX has no reason to exist with the Accord out there. Acura jacked up the base price by $5K for 2nd Gen TLX. For that money, AWD should (must) have been standard on all trims, down to the base (like Audi and Subaru do). Great color, looks awesome in ASPEC but extra $2K amortized over 5/6 years would have cost you less than a price of dinner at Arby's.

Yes, for some unknown reason the type S cannot be bought in this color. It's really hard to understand. One of the top 3 colors and you can't get it in their most expensive model. I get they want to have some off the wall color specific to the type S but it shouldn't be at the expense of a more popular color available on models down the food chain. Gen 1 TLX A-Spec did not have it available. Good to see they at least corrected that. Guess in 5 more years it will be available on the type S.

Oh, congrats to the OP. Nice choice.

I don't disagree on getting AWD (you'll likely get your 2K back when you trade/sell in the future) however the TLX is decidedly no longer a gussied up Accord.

Advance and Type S, and Tech to some extend (only if AWD) but base TLX is criminally overpriced at $38K. Even mid-range Civic has more features interior features (and room) than base TLX. It's comical that remote starter is not standard on TLX until you get to nearly $50K Advance but you can get it on a $20K Civic EX. Same goes for blind-spot monitoring, walk away lock, rear-cross traffic alerts.

I'm not advocating for anyone to buy Accord over TLX, frankly I couldn't care less but the fact is, base TLX costs more than Accord Touring. I'm not talking out of my rear, here's some facts:

TLX Base MSRP: $37,500
Accord Touring MSRP: $36,700

Touring has standard: parking sensors, real leather, cooled seats, navigation, remote starter, blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alerts, wireless apple carplay/android auto, wireless phone charger, smart walk-away lock, rear USB ports, head-up display, low-speed follow, heated rear seats, acoustic glass, wi-fi capability, NFC, adaptive dampers, etc. Getting bored of writing this but you get the point. TLX in Base trim doesn't have single one of these things and costs more. Give me a break.

Is the Accord a better value than the TLX - yes.
Is the TLX a glorified Accord - no.

Agreed 100%! But, you're probably shouting into deaf ears in this instance.

Trying to quantify a personal preference is an exercise in futility...and rightfully so.

Correct.

The "TLX is a glorified Accord argument" *used* to have some validity - but now that the TLX has it's own platform and unique styling both inside and out - it's simply not true anymore.

That's not to say people should buy the TLX or that it's inherently "better" than the Accord - we all have to make our own purchase judgements. I gave strong consideration to buying an Accord Touring Hybrid!

By any and all accounts, excluding Type S and MAYBE to some extent, Advance - it is. Had extensive time in the TLX SH-AWD A-Spec, 100% glorified Accord.

I don't know what's worse, comparing Accord to Legend (others, allegedly, prim out); or, comparing at-the-time Legend to current-time TLX (not allegedly, you).

It's own platform and double wishbone suspension are marketing gimmicks. I am fairly certain; no, actually, I am absolutely, 100% sure that 99.99% of people who own SH-AWD Acura, ANY SH-AWD Acura, have no clue how to use it or what torque-vectoring even means. Let alone going into sending 70% to the back, out of which 100% to each side, one wheel turns this way, outside wheel turns other way (picture wheelchair steering). To those people, the salesman throws up a brochure with a skeleton frame photo with the big highlighted words "DOUBLE WISHBONE" and the guy goes oooohhh, look honey, it's double wishbone, having no clue what the hell it means. I've owned close to 40 cars so far in my life, and that's just me, I'm not talking about cars owned by my parents, my wife, or other cars in my family that I have or had chance to drive for years. I think I speak with some experience (cautiously not using the word authority as I got 2 moderators just aching to throw me in cyber jail) that the new TLX, barring Advance and Type S is a marketing failure, overpriced, overhyped and has no reason to exist in FWD form. Until next time.

I think I speak with some experience (cautiously not using the word authority as I got 2 moderators just aching to throw me in cyber jail) that the new TLX, barring Advance and Type S is a marketing failure, overpriced, overhyped and has no reason to exist in FWD form. Until next time.
ok we get it. you hate Acura marketing and you hate the TLX. Thats fine. Please move on. Lets not poo poo on OP's thread. He's excited about his new car.

I have a TLX Tech and it's not a glorified Accord. I had a 2018 Accord EX-L 2.0 so I should know a little about both cars. The TLX is so much better than the Accord and I really don' t care about your value judgement. The TLX rides better, handles better, and just better. People will make their choice about each car and as noted it is not a "Glorified Accord" anymore..

For that money, AWD should (must) have been standard on all trims, down to the base (like Audi and Subaru do). Great color, looks awesome in ASPEC but extra $2K amortized over 5/6 years would have cost you less than a price of dinner at Arby's.
i wasn’t not looking to buy the SH-AWD. I wanted the FWD. simple as that. I know how I drive and where I drive. I’ve lived in this area since I was 5. All my previous Acura’s where FWD never had an issue with FWD. I’m happy with my purchase. I couldn’t tell you what the Accord has or doesn’t have since I was not looking to buy the accord. I don’t eat Arby’s so don’t know what that would cost me. To each it’s on I’m happy with my purchase and look forward in driving my FWD TLX.

You should always buy what you want. I was thinking the same way after my TL-S (sh-awd not even an option then) and first TLX. Second TLX I did opt for the sh-awd. I don't drive in the snow if I can help it but on dry pavement or wet there is a considerable improvement in handling/traction. I had a lot of wheel spin particularly when turning from a stop and stepping on it to get out in traffic and also on wet roads when stepping on it going around 20mph (only in the type S in that case).

Not everyone cares for or needs better traction or handling based on how they drive and it makes sense not to get it if you will never take advantage of it and I suspect there are a lot of people that fall into that category. IMO it still remains the best bang for the buck option they offer on the car and after having it I wouldn't buy one without it. I had gotten pretty used to the wheel spin, particularly on wet surfaces that not having it was such an eye opening experience. It also is a completely different feel on windy roads at speed. I enjoy driving on the more spirited side.

When it comes to cars the heart gets what the heart wants. The TLX is considerably more attractive than the Accord, which for some, would cancel out aditional features when comparing trims.

As a long time sales guy one of the things I learned early on is that people buy with emotion and later justify with intellect. It's true on all levels and certainly in the auto industry!
