There really is no hidden meanings.

I already expect them to make some money on the sale.

The deposit's purpose?
1. It clearly displays my intent as a serious prospective buyer.
2. Reserves this car for me exclusively (the exact 2021-TLX I would have custom-built-to-order).

Dealers don’t make as little as you’d think on cars. The “invoice price” is grossly inflated and the dealer makes a good cut, unless you somehow get them to hack off 20% or something crazy. The person who takes the hit is the salesperson on their commission, which is why they get grumpy when you try to bargain the price down. Right now, the going rate for expected discount off sticker for the M340i is 10-12% off BEFORE incentives. Yea, there are guys getting M340i’s with options that they want coming dangerously close to under $50k. The Type S is going to be in some tricky water upon release.

But understandable ... if you have the disposable income, do what makes you happy. At the end of the day, it’s your money and we all die someday.

I'll be curious to see what kind of pricing you end up getting and how it compares to the going market rate. I can't imagine that this car is going to be in short supply; crossovers rule the day, and sedans tend to languish on dealer lots. It's not like this is a low-volume highly-sought after car; I'm willing to bet the average days on lot for even the first batch will be at least a couple weeks

For a US city (in the top-10 per size) we have one Acura dealer. Even ignoring colors, there are 8 possible models (since SH-AWD is optional on all models).
They are getting 7 (and 3 are already spoken-for). That leaves 4 (Basically, they ordered one of each config).
Other dealers across the country are likely doing something similar (or less). Remember, this is the new Covid-19 economy.
Back to us ... maybe one for the show-room floor. That leaves 3.

Not sure how you figure there is going to be many 2021-TLX sedans languishing on dealer lots.

And contrary to popular belief, not many buyers now-days are going to walk-in and buy a $35k-$45k sedan (off the lot) that is not configured exactly (or close) to the way they want it. Personally, even a non-acceptable color would stop me.

I’m curious where you live that there’s only 1 Acura dealership. In these parts there’s no fewer than 10 within an 40 mile radius, and we’re not even in the top 10 in terms of metro population size.

Yes, I said it was risky. Yes, hot new cars (in short supply) often sell for near MSRP on initial release.

And the initial sale is just the start of the "marriage". At least 3 times now, the dealer and/or Honda has stepped-up with Goodwill-Repairs (saving us thousands of dollars). Like I said, we don't get everything free/cheap, but I do feel we have always been treated fairly.
This is the only thing I don't agree with, which is fine if it doesn't bother you. I have never met a person who didn't want to nail a deal on something. Personally, I would never purchase a vehicle I haven't physically seen, driven and tested. One thing I do agree with, life is too short. I wish you the best. I hope it works out for you.

You nailed it! Life is short...sometimes we think too much. As far as financial you're comfortable. Good for you.

After all the BS the only thing that matters is that you are happy with what you bought & OK with the price you paid.

Given that Type S will be a small volume seller I just don't see Acura given any discounts especially for the first 2 years or so. Unless, this thing is a total flop LOL. Even now, they're not giving much off the Type R.

Looks like the type S will come with a 20x9. So i guess some 20x10s should pull a premium. This is gonna be fun!

1. I'm in one of the largest Texas cities.

2. What state? Authorized Acura Dealers? How is that even possible?

California. We have 34 Acura dealerships total in the state. High Asian population = a lot of Acura drivers. If Acura does one thing well, it's that they know their demographics.
For the SF area, 11 in the greater SF Bay Area: https://www.acura.com/dealer-locator...?zipcode=94115
For the LA area, 14 in the greater LA area: https://www.acura.com/dealer-locator...?zipcode=90210

No wonder. In TX, nobody cares about Japanese cars. It's all about domestics, pick-ups and anything with a V8

I am in the Philly metro and within 30 miles of me I have seven. If I expand to 50 miles I stopped counting at close to 15.

I never really thought of it like that, but you might be right. I say that because there is always "some guy in a truck" slowing-down the fast-lane.

Yeah, my brother (and many others) have pickup-trucks (many are Japanese) and large trucks like Suburban/Expedition.
But in my neighborhood, mostly luxury SUVs , sedans, EV, and sports-cars.

To you (and the others who have posted on this):

That's crazy. Yes, this would significantly change the whole dynamic of purchasing a new Acura from a dealer.
While I feel like I know the game pretty well around here ... this makes me feel like I live a sheltered life.

I was looking at the Advance but now i see the interior can only come in wood trim. Not a fan of the wood look, so very disappointed that i cant get the aluminum trim. .

Everything is bigger in Texas...except for "import" dealership networks it seems

I was never much for American history growing-up, but I really like the movie National Treasure. I think it would be cool to live in Philadelphia (among all that history).

I'm guessing there is a lot of "old money" around there and that properly values are on the high-side?

Yeah, so here ... 1 Acura dealer and only 2 Audi dealers.

Yeah compared to the southwest it is very expensive but compared to NYC and DC it's a little cheaper (for now, the cost of living is rapidly increasing). It has a lot of problems like most big cities do but there's a lot to like and yes it's amazing living around all of the history and while not originally from here I have been living here for a while now and I am never not impressed by all that can be found around me history-wise. Even many of the 'burbs are really cool and have a lot of history and yes you are correct, lots of old money, especially in an area called the "main line".

I've been to parts of TX a few times, mostly the pan handle and Dallas.

I'm in the camp that says discounts will be easy to get within a few months. Its a sedan, and at the price point we are seeing people will have plenty of options, and Acura's mojo that they had 20-30 years ago is long gone. The MDX & RDX are by far their most popular vehicles and there are usually at least 20 of each of them sitting on the lot near me.

Yeah, considering that the RDX can be had these days well below invoice, and considering that the RDX is more appealing to most buyers these days, I can't see the TLX selling for more than invoice once the shine from the launch wears off. There aren't many people who would be willing to pay more for the sedan counterpart, and everywhere else the sedan counterpart to the crossover version has a much lower transaction price because dealerships just can't move them.

Seems like advance is the way to go. Just a 2k difference from the aspec and you get more goodies. You can easily black out the chrome trims, and add the lip spoiler accessory, which imo looks better and more subtle than the aspec one. Add the body kit, and it'll look sportier than the aspec. Only issue is the darkened head and tail lights that the aspec has

I agree. The A-Spec might look a little better, but the Advance is functionally better, and you get a lot for that extra $2K. That said, I'm not a fan of appearance packages that are all show and no go, so perhaps I'm more biased than most.

Based on my experience previously shopping for the current model my take is that the post negotiation price difference between A-spec and Advance will probably be more like $3,000. For what ever reason the dealers seemed more willing to discount the A-spec.

I imagine because most of the market does not care to spend that much money on an appearance package. Perhaps Acura customers aren't that vain...yet. If they were, then we should already be seeing a tacky $500 option to get a glowing A emblem on the front a la Mercedes
