Hits and Misses: 2021 TLX SH-AWD vs. 2018 Accord 2.0t
Just wanted to share my observation after 2 tanks of gas in the TLX. Car has ~700 miles so far. I like the car overall but feel they could have made it so much better. Maybe it will be improved with updates. I'm not shitting on the car. The "hits" are just what stands out. There are more I like about the car.
Hits
Misses
Hits
- The suspension and chassis feels great especially mid-corner over rough bumps. The car stays planted.
- The AWD helps the car rotate without oversteering. Very noticeable when the conditions are wet. Though I wish you can truly turn traction and stability control completely off for those days you wanna have fun
- Subjectively it looks great. My favorite angle is from the rear. It looks low, wide, and the body lines makes it look aggressive and unique. Had many people walk over and check out the car.
- I like the True Touch infotainment when in Acura’s OEM system. Very easy to use as you don’t have to drag the curser around to select things.
- Amazing sounds system.
Misses
- Powerful engine but the throttle lag is very noticeable. My Accord felt livelier and more willing to go in Normal mode. Not really complaining about not having more power but more about how the gas pedal feels disconnected.
- Gas mileage. Driving the same way as my Accord but I consistently get 4mpg less than my Accord. FWD and AWD TLX is rated 1-2mpg lower compared to each other. Not sure why there is such a big gap between TLX and Accord
- Lag in the navigation system as well as the information display between the gauges.
- Fit and finish mostly feel high quality however my hood is not aligned in the front right compared to front left. The hazard light button feels CHEAP. I was disgusted when I pressed it the first time as I was not expecting the cheap feel.
- Leather seat quality is questionable. I am 170lbs. After 600 miles the leather already looks like it’s getting loose on both the driver and passenger side. The passenger side has been used 5 times by my gf (105lbs) and has a weird dimple.
- No spare tire. No excuses for this.
- True Touch not optimized for Android Auto. Very distracting when trying to use it while driving.
- Infotainment screen could have utilized the space a bit better. They could have integrated the split screen a bit better or made it optional. Ideally the split screen should disappear when not being used and slide open when the True Touch side bar pad is used.
- The True Touch pad, volume adjuster and prev/next button could have been placed differently to use up that empty space around it.
- Accord had remote start and it was $15k less and older.

5 pros and 9 cons after only 700 miles - I'd give it back while you still can; if you can.

OP, good looking car and thanks for sharing your impressions. I'll probably look into getting a spare tire for piece of mind whenever I get mine. Enjoy it!

Good looking cars in your photo. Why do people on the 2G forum keep comparing Accord Sport to TLX? Especially the likes of an AWD Advance? Is that like a natural purchase progression or something? The 2018 Sport 2.0T went for the upper $20s brand new while the 2021 AWD Advance runs mid to upper $40s. For anyone spending 50%-75% more (which I doubt many people are cross shopping these trims), I'd expect their hit lists to be much longer and misses list to be very short or empty.
I mean, you could buy an Accord Sport and almost another Accord Sport for your wife for one TLX AWD Advance. That's not to say how bad the TLX is, but what an incredible value and performance the Accord Sport is.

I've always said that Honda does not make an AWD Accord because it would eat up Acura sedan sales. After owning both I still hold that opinion.

OP, the bad fuel economy is primarily due to the TLX being considerably heavier than your previous Accord. I was comparing the TLX against the ES350 last night and the exterior dimensions are nearly identical but with none of the ES's rear interior or trunk space.
If you want the best mpg out of that TLX, drive only in Normal/Comfort mode and make sure engine AUTO ON/OFF is enabled.

The leather in both of my TLX's seemed to wrinkle and get loose looking very quickly even on the passenger seat with barely any use or weight in a short period of time, I think that's just how they are. My second one had the alcantara inserts so at least that part of the seat showed no wear. As for remote start I always found it odd that a 2016 mid level civic had it standard and it's not standard on every TLX. My S5 doesn't have it either so there is that. I probably wouldn't use it much so wouldn't pay extra to get it installed. Overall you don't sound too overjoyed with the car. I had the same feeling with my TLXs. Happy to have a new car but not overjoyed. I had a decent list of things I didn't like on the TLX and some are on your list as well. My 07 type S I had to reach pretty far to find something I didn't like and had none with respect to performance or interior quality.
