2023 TLX Type S-Sloppy Chassis Adhesive

I really like to inspect the manufacturing quality of my stuff. I was looking under the hood of my 2023 TLX Type S a little while ago and saw this weld. Honestly surprised QC didn’t catch it and clean up the excess before it was painted over.

FWIW, that does not look like a weld but chassis sealant. used between two panels that are probably spot welded together then the joint is sealed to prevent corrosion. No worries, it looks OK.

Thx for that info. 👍👍 The type A personality in me still would’ve preferred for them to wipe it if before sending it to paint. Lol

Yeah that is adhesive. You have not seen the worst - under my RDX, there is an unsightly drip of adhesive.

Isn't it amazing that even panel sealant is colour matched to the body ?

It's not color matched - it is painted. There's a small spot where I can see a bit of silver. It's under the hood so not a big deal, and nothing I'm worried about, I'm just surprised it made it past QC... looks sloppy.

I think there is nothing to worry but I completely understand your point. I am the same, I have noticed that in my 2020 MDX, one side of the hood has larger gap than the other and it bothers me every time i look at it.

This was an issue in my 2016 TLX and 2019 TLX A-Spec but it was unnoticeable enough to others that it didn’t bother me too much

I worked at an Acura dealership for many years. We saw this stuff all the time from the US cars. Go inspect a car built in Japan. Those same areas are absolutely perfect.

That is correct, its to mitigate galvanic corrosion from dissimilar materials. The sealant can also function like a liquid shim, doesn't add any additional torsional or shear rigidity, there are 54 PLS blind rivets that serve that purpose for the aluminum shock tower, as shown in the GDIS present back in 2021. Note that liquid shim can release, which may lead to false indications in UT scans, false positive delaminations across carbon fiber/composites with respect to NDI, but not an issue in this case as it serves to bridge the gap between stamp steel and cast aluminum extrusion.
