- 01:26There's a turbocharged V6 under this car's hood. AcuraThe 2021 Acura TLX will launch later this year, and it'll mark the return of the brand's storied Type S performance line. Ahead of its debut on May 28, Acura released the first teaser image and video of the 2021 TLX on Wednesday, giving us our best look yet at the new sedan -- or it's rear end, at least.
Acura says the new TLX takes inspiration from the company's 2016 Precision Concept as well as the 2019 Type S Concept. The link to these showcars is clear in the light signature of the LED taillights, though the creases have been rounded, especially compared to the angular design of the Type S Concept.
Below the lights, we can clearly make out four large exhaust tips, like the ones on the Type S showcar. Speaking of which, notice the Type S logo on the left side of the TLX's rump, while the SH-AWD text on the right side stands for Acura's Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive tech.
Acura has already confirmed the 2021 TLX Type S will be powered by a brand-new, turbocharged, 3.0-liter V6 engine, which is expected to have well over 300 horsepower. Acura has yet to officially confirm any of the car's finer points, but we'd expect the standard models to be available with a choice of front- or all-wheel drive and use four-cylinder power -- likely the 2.0-liter turbo engine found in the company's RDX crossover.
"The new TLX will be the quickest, best-handling and most well-appointed sport sedan in Acura history," the company said in a statement.
The excitement is there...This 7 sec teaser put the internet on fire. Everyone is waiting to see the new Type S after 12 years. Let's hope Acura doesn't disappoint us.
I will be happy if the V6 engine produces anywhere from 365 and up!
Was at my Acura dealer today and chatted with the General manager whom I have known for 12 years. He indicated that given the plants havent reopened yet, he doesnt expact to see the Type S until late fall. He also said that they had expected to have the 2.0 turbo models by now to sell, but that will be delayed until plants re=open and production ramps up.
Production actually started this week although at a slower line speed. No idea if they started the 2021 TLX-likely not since they have to get used to wearing masks and face shields etc on the assembly line. I am sure they will want the launch to be smooth and will wait a few weeks to get it all together so to speak.
The 2021 teaser pics look great-can't wait until Thursday.
Be nice to see you all get what you have been hoping for some for as much as 10 years. This is the checkpoint. Better or near this & Acura returns back to its glory days when the TL S-Type was a top contender among the mid sized sports sedans. The base car is also in this for the 4 cylinder target.
We are few days away...so excited for the Type S! I really hope in this reveal, they share everything. Engines, pricing, exact release date and etc. No BS of just reveal the car and hide all the important info.
Hoping some mag or website leaks it early, assuming they were even given anything ahead of the reveal (not likely, given how annoyingly secretive Acura has been about this).
Either that, or spy shots with minimal or no camo at all, like all the other past generations. Gotta give it to them, they're doing a damn good job keeping this under wraps (pun intended)
- Beautiful wheels
- Smaller Acura logo
- Kept most of the concept
- Dual Exhaust for the base model
- Flat bottom steering wheel
-Seems like there are some stitches on the dash
I know there is one thing missing: Digital dash. Let's see
Gorgeous! I've hear the new 3.0L V6 will give 400+ hp! I just hope they didn't tone it down too much from the prototype release at SEMA 2019... Please pray with me for a MT option

that’s what I heard from a Quebec dealer. Let’s see.

Look closer at the leaked Type S interior pic; I think I spy a digital dash.

I was hopeful for a MT too, but after looking at that dash it would be an entire different config because of the touchpad and where the transmission buttons are now and I highly doubt they'd have a stickshift sticking out of the dash like the old 2005 Honda Civic Si's did. Maybe they'll release something in a couple years, but it's not looking promising.

I think the stick shift is dead at Acura...and at most brands.

I'd say not. Looks just like the RDX speedo/tach display
Looks great. And no signs of a pain-sunroof. Let’s see what kind of power figures this thing puts out and if it’s competitive, along with reasonably priced, I’ll be seeing one in my driveway in a couple years. Acura did a helluva job on the looks.
I was hoping they'd bring it over with the 2.0T at least because they have that config with the Accord already.
Frankly I'm surprised the Accord still has one. The only way that's viable is because it's a mass market car - I'd still be shocked if 5% of Accords are sold with an MT.
Not sure why it took so long since the cockpit is exactly the same as the RDX which has been out for 2 years. The tracking pad doesn't get great reviews and I was hoping the dash would have been more like the Mercedes and all integrated.
My opinion is this head unit won't age well and will be outdated in a couple of years since most companies are moving away from the "tacked on" tablet like screen. And we all know how long it takes Acura to upgrade their head units. Is it better? Yes. But groundbreaking? Not at all. I like the exterior design updates and the engine upgrades.

Yeah. One of the most legendary sports cars in all of history is no longer going to carry any MT options starting with the 2020 model year (and no one cares, and everyone and their cousin are creaming themselves all over this new car) and so there is about a 0.001% chance that the new TLX-S will have a MT option. It turned out that not that many people really cared about MT in the end

I don't feel like it needs to be ground breaking in the interior department....Mercedes is known to push tech and novelty boundaries...which is good for those who can afford that under warranty or under a lease but are notorious for massively unreliable and big repair bills years down the road.
Acura is probably trying to follow Toyota in that they are trying to do what has worked and has been loved by the market (see RDX sales) and then upgrade the chassis/mechanical for a TLX-S. No need to push these kinds of tech/interior-gimmick boundaries with the TLX-S because all/most of the enthusiast have been pushing for have been really an upgrade in performance, not the un-needed interior widgets.
In fact I dare to say that many, including on this forum AZine, would probably PREFER a lesser-tech interior IF it means they could get more HP/MT option/better chassis/etc.
Here's a hypothetical game/poll for those in this thread:
Would you push a button to: down-grade the interior 10-15% for an increase in HP/better brakes/suspension/chassis-tuning/possible MT/better handling?
I would say a majority of enthusiasts would probably push the button.

IF the TLX ends up being 50-60K, having such features for the price tag is what the consumers want now a days. The stinger is being refreshed and made changes to keep up with the industry. I'll be honest with you. I wasn't a fan of digital gauge clusters (not a fan of certain models), but I will say my X3 has one of the best digital gauge clusters (2018-2019). I'm not a fan of the 2020+ clusters. It's best to assume at some point for enthusiasts wanting more performance, to wait and see if the aftermarket support will be available. Keep in mind, this is a tremendous step forward for Acura and they are doing things out of the bread and butter cookie cutter builds. It's too soon to assume certain things, so only time will tell.
I'd say Audi has the best digital gauge cluster in the industry with their virtual cockpit.(Excluding Tesla Model S, which isn't in the same price league) When I test drove the new 330xi, their version of the virtual cockpit is pale in comparison. It's a $1,100 option to add it and felt like more like a gimmick than it being functional.

The new Mercedes MBUX is really good as well. So much in fact that I actually prefer it to Audi's MMI, which I agree is much better than iDrive and Mercedes COMAND.
