I moved on from 03 TL as it gave me a lot of trouble and bought 2013 infiniti M37 , RWD. If I decide to sell my M37, I would be interested in either 2021 TLX Type S or 2021 Audi RS 5 . Both looks great.

2021 Acura TLX Possibly Leaked In Patent Images

It looks a lot like the Type S Concept from last summer – and that’s a good thing.

We have a solid idea of what the second-generation 2021 Acura TLX will look like when it arrives. Acura previewed the car last summer with the Type S Concept. Shortly after the concept’s reveal, our spy photographers caught the sedan out testing, which was similar in proportions and shape to the concept. Now, possibly leaked patent images appear to show the 2021 TLX before we’re supposed to see it, and it looks like the concept, too.

There are five patent images, which appeared on the French WorldScoop.forumpro.fr forum, that show the TLX from several different angles, providing a clear look at the next-gen car. It’s also difficult to dismiss the images’ grayscale aesthetic that’s common with patent images. They show a car that looks quite like the Type S Concept, with several small, though noticeable, tweaks.
The car in the patent images features the same shape as the concept, which matches with the spy photos we’ve published of the car. The front and rear overhangs appear longer than they do on the concept, though a difference in camera angle could amplify that. The kink in the lower doors carries over, as do the aggressive “intakes” in the lower fascia, though it seems Acura watered them down for the production version.

What We Know About The 2021 TLX:

2021 Acura TLX Type S To Have Well Over 300 Horsepower: Report
2021 Acura TLX Spy Photos Provide Best Look Yet At The Interior The rear also looks like the concept, though, again, it’s been toned down for production, according to the alleged patent images. The taillights feature the same design, though not as aggressive as those on the Type S Concept. The outlets in the rear bumper concept carry over, though they’re far less aggressive on in the patent images. There does appear to be enough room in the lower valence for quad exhaust pipes.

Gallery: 2021 Acura TLX Patent Images Leak

5 PhotosWe shouldn’t have to wait long to see the 2021 TLX. It’s set to arrive for the 2021 model year, which means we could see the production version soon. When it arrives, it could use the RDX’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine for motivation, though there are rumors of a newly developed turbocharged V6 for Acura. It certainly has the looks – now, Acura needs to give it power.

Honestly the leaked pictures from the RDX infotainment is the cAr. There is no need to speculate it.

go check those pictures and that’s the 2021 TLX.

We have a very good understanding of the interior based on the leaked pictures and RDX. Exterior will vary a bit for sure.
Acura is sleeping that’s all. They should Type 2 in August 2019 🤦‍♂️ A year later nothing. Sad but what can we do.

this thing won’t compete with an S5 sport back let alone the RS5. Comical cross shopping.

You’re asking ACURA to compete with a 12 second car with its TLX. That’s asking a lot.

An RS5 is straight comical to consider vs any type s.

RS5 is in a different league, can't compare it. S5 is in the same class and Type S should at least keep up with it. Let's see what we get this Thursday.

We can hope. I would love that. But, the s5 vs. TLX is not in the same league. If the Type S is truly a step up then it could be a competitor to the s5.

If the new TLX doesn't have a liftgate, the real competitor is the S4 instead

No it won't. I can assure you on that. Lease the 1st year production, buy from the 2nd year and on.

Say what you will, but the naïveté is refreshing . In any case, we need people to buy the 1st model year so that they can uncover all the problems. Truly doing God’s work.

What difference will that really make? Whether you finance or lease, they both will still be covered under the same warranty. Pay a grand or so more and you got yourself an extension. You can't expect an Acura to stop dead center while you are driving either. The power train has been used for years now. Going back to the Type R, RDX, and Accord. Just curious to hear why they would need another year. The infotainment is updated through software, so its not like buying a car the next year will make a difference to that either, that just leaves you with the body/suspension which are the only real things you should worry about. Question is, is that really something you need to worry about for an Acura/Honda product?

What about the 16-Valve, 2.0-Liter DOHC VTEC® turbocharged engine that will be in the 2021 TLX (not type S)? Is this a nice engine if I can't afford the type S?

I am guessing you haven't own a 2014/2015 TLX, I did and yes it would stop in the middle of the road thanks to the beautiful Gearbox.

Which powertrain is used for years? The 2021 TLX is getting an almost brand new engine except for teh 4 cylinder one.

LOL over the air software/ infortainment updates? Its not a Tesla

Besides its common for almost any manufacturer, first year products always have quality issues which get refined over the new few years.

The expected power is very close to current V6 power (276 vs 290) so should be fairly quick I think.

I am talking about the 2.0T mated with the 10 Speed which has been used by the Accord, RDX and Type R (The engine). That is the power train that has been used in all 3 cars which will be offered on the base models, this will most likely replace the V6 powertrain that you had. That is not anything new. The only thing that is new is the Type S power train, that is something you should worry about. I'm strictly talking about the 2.0T and 10-Speed.

LOL and yes do you not know about the over the air updates for Acura? Have a look into the new RDX, its a thing.

Patel,

This vehicle is completely new. Acura is making a tremendous step forward from the bread and butter cookie cutter builds. Both base and type-s models will share a 10 speed transmission with the type-s having a beefier setup and a re-calibrated sh-awd setup. The 3.0T engine is not like anything they've made including the current NSX. They may share some similarities, but the biggest difference is, it's not hand built and will be a mass produced engine on an assembly line. My point was, leasing the 1st year is ideal not because of HAVING warranty, because when you no longer have warranty and own the vehicle is where it becomes an issue. Nobody knows 100% for sure how reliable it will be, but as reliability has shown for Acura the last several years (what you see here and other enthusiast site's) there will be issues and hopefully nothing major. I worked for Acura, I don't assume things. I know it off 1st hand and I also keep up with issues they have.

The power delivery is different because of the Turbo vs N/A. The turbo engines TQ will peek fairly early (Around 2-3K) which will have a tremendous advantage over the N/A V6. Quite possible that the 2.0T will be quicker than the V6 N/A engines, as long as the transmission is on the money.

I see your point. I was leaning into more about the base model though, I agree with you about waiting a year for the Type S, 100%. Yes but you got me thinking about the new SH-AWD system. I will definitely consider leasing in the beginning after hearing what you have to say though, so I appreciate it!

I agree, a lot of this is going to boil down to the transmission. When the 3G RDX made the switch for the K20C from the J35, it actually ended up being slower because it appears that torque was be held back, presumably to protect the driveline from grenading itself. The power delivery from the dyno charts looks pretty suboptimal as well. Definitely being held back by software. I imagine this must have been addressed if the same 10AT is being used for the Type-S model, but if for some reason it's not I would not be surprised if the new car is slower than the outgoing one. Fingers crossed they put in the work to fix that.

If you've been following the RDX sub-forum, you'll see that the OTA updates have been incredibly inconsistent, and of marginal utility, sometimes even making things even worse. Plenty of folks had to go into the dealerships to get the updates done because the OTA updates just flat out didn't work. It's almost like Tesla has a bunch of in-house MIT engineers writing their software, whereas Acura outsourced it to some agency employing Greendale Community College dropouts.

Ok my bad, I thought your were talking about the Type S motor. Yes the 2.0T though new should have had enough beta testing done by RDX & Accord. Type R doesnt have same gearbox.

RDX yes, i agree, i remember how they provided Android Auto Update OTA so going by that the new TLX should have this advantage too

Agree, it should be quicker with probably similar or better efficiency than the 2.4. Ofcourse the transmission could botch this up but since they have has enough time testing it in RDX & Accord(which the new TLX is based on) it should be much better.

The thing that worries me about a 10 speed transmission is gear hunting. so far the 8 speed ZF transmission has been superior and used by many brands including performance variants of base models. I hope Acura really fine tunes the 10 speed transmission, especially since it will have different drive modes.

Unfortunately that ZF8 is made for longitudinal layouts, so you will never see one on Acura sedans. That was the reason Acura went with the ZF9 as it was designed for transverse layouts.

You're right, I forgot about that. Lets keep our fingers cross that they have better luck this time around.

True. But the performance is still the same issue. I believe it needs to compete with the s4/s5 performance and if instead they targeted Infiniti's poorer performance it's a mistake. IMO.

Well all the spy shots that have been posted didn't show it testing with a Q50. It was a S4 and C43 if I remember right. We just have to wait until tomorrow to see what they say.

My 2019 rdx ha great shift quality and I haven't noticed any abnormal gear hunting behavior. Been really happy about it.

Just curious to hear why they would need another year. The infotainment is updated through software, so its not like buying a car the next year will make a difference to that either, that just leaves you with the body/suspension which are the only real things you should worry about. Question is, is that really something you need to worry about for an Acura/Honda product?

RDX yes, i agree, i remember how they provided Android Auto Update OTA so going by that the new TLX should have this advantage too
Yes, unfortuntely it does. Just pop over to the RDX forum and read posts about the RDX, with the same drive train as the new TLX, goes into Limp mode right in the middle of trying to pass a car on the highway, or merging onto a highway. I made the mistake of buying a 1st year TLX, I won't make that mistake again.

Here is a thread titled 'At the end of my rope with my RDX' and Acura has no idea what causes it. My own TLX went into limp mode, but only once and that was several years ago. Luckily I was not in a critical situation and I was able to stop and restart the car and it cleared. Acura had no idea why that happened.

Good to know! There's been complaints about the RDX having some issues, at 1st they believed it was turbo lag but it ended up being the transmission hunting gears. Some car reviews on youtube mentioned the same thing. I'm sure they will do an update to the software. There was a facebook post saying the transmission has been revised to switch gears quickly. So lets see what happens when the vehicle is tested.

There's been a few other limp mode threads too:

Lest we only blame Acura, it looks like this is something that's also effecting the 2.0T Accords too:
https://www.driveaccord.net/threads/...p-mode.544675/
https://www.driveaccord.net/threads/...dealer.534971/

All that is to say, this is probably something that TLX owners will want to look out for, as it's not isolated to just the RDX.

Here's the longer thread referred to in the first DA link.
