Winter fast approaching so I figured this would be a good as time as any to start looking for a good deal on rims/tires for the TLX
Any size suggestions?

I would likely go with the 17inch size for snows, mounted on steel rims regardless of model of car.
There are more choices now for 17 inch sizes and there could be clearance concerns with 16 inch rims. I am considering the Nokian in link below (available at Kal-Tire) first otherwise between Blizzak and X-Ice.
I do some traveling up north (Algonquin Park etc) in winter and would not want to cheap out on snow tires.

Had the steel rims on my 3G TL, but I am going for some decent looking 17" after market for the TLX. Just have too make sure that that the TPMS sensors can be installed. While practical, the industrial utility vehicle look of steel rims is so hard to take. Reviews of the Michelin X-Ice are good and they are reasonably priced.

Narrower tires are generally better in the winter as they have a tendency to cut into the snow as opposed to riding up on top of it. The flip side is the smaller contact patch tends to lead to lesser performance when the roads are not snow covered.
