Thump in trunk over speed bumps

I have the factory spare tire kit. It is bolted down tight. When I go over speed bumps, even slowly, there is a thump as if the spare tire cover or the entire foam insert is coming up and dropping back down.

Anyone else get this? Dealer says nothing from factory in it.

Have you tried taking the kit out and seeing if the sound goes away?

are you going over the bump with only 1 side of the car or 2 wheels at a time?

If you do only 1 wheel/side at a time, you but a lot more stress on the suspension and the Sway/Torsion Bars.

When the torsion bars flex the rubber bushings and endlinks keep them in place. Excess stress can cause a THUMP noise esp when the body is twisted and the bushings slip.

Also it could be a failed rear shock. It happens on mass produced cars.

No..for sure it is the spare tire tire cover. Problem is that the foam insert holding the pump and tools does not sit deep enough into the spare tire, thus the cover/panel no longer sits flush with the trunk floor.

I need to show this to the dealer and see what the fix is. It may be to cut the foam insert, take out about half an inch and reglue to together.

Sorry to ask, but is the tire upside down?

I'm seriously not even going to answer that.

You already did. It's upside down or a defective spare tire kit as it should be flush. Go to your dealer and they'll help you. Seems a bit beyond what you can do.

When purchasing a spare tire kit they give you a NEW floor trunk liner. It is thinner than the original one so this way it sits flush. Maybe they forgot to give you the new trunk floor liner but yes there is one specifically for the spare tire kit to sit flush

This isn't entirely correct. I purchased the spare tire kit a few months after getting my TLX and installed it myself. The trunk floor liner is not replaced. The kit provides you with a new foam insert that holds the tools, this is not as deep as the stock one so it sits flush over the spare tire. Also, the kit provides you with a foam piece that sits underneath the spare tire so that there is something that sits between the metal of the car and the spare tire to prevent noise.

I would make sure the bolt that holds the tire down is tight, all the tools are secure in the foam insert, and that you have a foam piece underneath the tire

Is the spare tire kit the same for AWD and PAWS models? I ask because the trunk liner for my RLX PAWS is different from liner for AWD model.

Just to clarify, I have a 2WD Tech. M

The spare tire kit for the 2wd base and tech both use the original spare tire cover.

The 2wd Advance and AWD Advance both get a new spare tire cover.

Hello --

First-time Acura owner here... just purchased a 2016 TLX Tech 2.4-Cyl w/ the spare tire kit installed. Great car (so far), but it does have some quirks - the "clunk in the trunk" sound being one of them. Unfortunately, I have been unable to reproduce the sound, but I have heard it 2-3 times while driving the vehicle in different conditions and speeds, but only since installing the spare tire kit. My thought is that it's the spare tire cover bouncing around from time to time, so I'm not overly worried about it at this stage.

Were you ever able to track down the cause of the thunking sound on your TLX?

They may have put some extra foam bits stuck on to rim etc to stop rattling. This raises the trunk floor cover so it bounces. I had them take the foam bits off

I had a thump in the rear of mine and it turned out to be the shocks. I was sure the noise was something in the trunk. Shocks replaced and the noise is gone.
